"The new Library, at Fifth Avenue from 40th to 42nd Streets, occupies the site of the old Croton Reservoir
. It was built at a cost of $9,000,000. The cornerstone was laid Nov. 10th, 1902, and the building was opened to the public May 23rd, 1911. It contains over 1,500,000 books, with room for 1,000,000 more." [LIB1776]
