LIB026438In 1956, the Downers Grove Public Library in Illinois was located at 1000 Curtiss Street. The library had been in existence for nearly 50 years, having been established in 1900 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a public library in the community.At that time, the library's collection consisted of approximately 3,000 books, and it was housed in a small room in the village hall. Over the years, however, the library grew and expanded, moving to larger locations as its collection and services continued to expand.By 1956, the Downers Grove Public Library had a collection of over 45,000 books and other materials, including magazines, newspapers, and audio recordings.
