[LIB9939] - Established in 1903, the Paxton Carnegie Library remains one of Paxton's finest landmarks. During the library's long history, its architectural design features have been carefully preserved. Construction began with a gift of $10,000 from Andrew Carnegie. The architect was Paul O. Moratz of Bloomington, Illinois. Every attempt has been made to keep the library up-to-date and relevant to today's library users, while maintaining and honoring the heritage of the library and the Paxton community.

[LIB9892] - The bottom photograph shows "Wheeler Hall." This Romanesque style red brick and rock faced sandstone building was originally the University library. Reminiscent of the Richardson Romanesque style, with its round arched windows, it was intended to harmonize with the second Old Main which burned in 1969. [http://explorecarbondale.com/node/113]

[LIB9174] Apparently the sender was having a better time than ever and "I have plenty of money." You've got to love this one: “Book mutilation in Evanston. The authorities of the Evanston Public Library are looking for a man who has a mania for destroying valuable books. Within a week several volumes have been mutilated by a red hot instrument run through the pages. From the atlases maps have disappeared. Serialized works have also suffered. The Council passed a new ordinance making the punishment more severe.” --Times Herald [Website]

[LIB7612] In 1899, Mr. Oliver Lincoln willed property on Washington Street at Sheridan Road to the city to be used as a park. In 1901, the Lincoln heirs provided a conveyance granting the city the right to erect “upon said remised a library building or buildings.” A Board member of the then-existing Library Association appealed to Mr. Andrew Carnegie for funds. Mr. Carnegie responded with $25,000.00 “if the city of Waukegan would furnish a suitable site and through Council agree to $2,500.00 a year support of said library.” The proposal was accepted and a stone building of Ionian Greek style architecture was constructed. This building served the community as a library for sixty-two years. [Website]

How his name became attached to our library is as fascinating and complex as the man himself. Now, who would not want to read more? You can, just click here!

[LIB7123] The Mattoon Public Library was formed by a group of interested citizens in 1893. Ten years later in 1903 the library moved into its current location. The library was built with funds from Andrew Carnegie and is one of the many Carnegie libraries in central Illinois. Andrew Carnegie believed that a person had to educate themself and that libraries afforded anyone that opportunity. He also believed that people had to lift themselves up because no one was going to do it for him. The stairs leading up to the main entrances reflect this belief. In 1995 an addition was built onto the main building. The people involved with the renovation wanted to keep the original feel of the building and unlike many other Carnegie libraries, the addition closely matches the original. Unless someone is looking for it, it can be hard to tell what parts of the library is the old building and which are the new. [Source]

[LIB6858]- The roots of the Dixon Public Library reach back to 1872 when the firemen of Dixon Hose Company began a small subscription library. It became a city library in 1895--96. In 1899 O. B. Dodge, the first president of the library board, offered to build a new building, which was formally opened to the citizens of Dixon in early 1901. The facility was remodeled in 1955 when the apartment occupied by the library custodian was converted for use as a children's department. A new addition which changed the library to its present layout was opened in 1969, and the elevator was added in 1986. The building was refurbished in 1994. [Source]

Library, Quincy, IL 1914 Vintage by markomundo View more Library Postcards [LIB6639] - "The Quincy Library, the only public library legally established here under the laws of the State, was organized in the year 1837. There were one or more attempts at establishing a library here prior to 1837, but there now remains no trace of them. The Quincy Library, now over forty-four years old, it is hoped has already laid a foundation for a popular and valuable institution yet to grow up among us. Seeing the short-lived nature of most voluntary societies which have sprung up here, and after a brief period have died in their infancy, never passing their period of "dentation," we may reasonably hope that the Quincy Library, now forty-four years of age, may meet with many friendly ha

[LIB6513] - "Admonitions to the library assistant have been many — so many, in fact, that she sometimes wonders whether she is supposed to have any initiative and will-power of her own or merely live by the rule of "thou shalt" and "thou shalt not" as laid down by others. It is an encouraging thought, however, that, although every library has more or less definite staff regulations, the very qualities that make for the most professionally are not usually set forth in codes of rules." - The Assistant's Opportunities to Serve Her Library. The Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. [Wikipedia]

[LIB4862] - Public library service for Canton, Illinois was initiated in 1892 thanks to the beneficence of William Parlin, Sr., inventor and founder of the P&O Works, a plow factory that was later sold to International Harvester. Parlin bequeathed $8,000 for the construction of the Parlin Public Library, as it was initially called, in his will, under the stipulation that the City of Canton would contribute a sum of $5,000. Two short-lived controversies ensued, which involved: 1.) The level of tax mill to be levied; and 2.) An initial stipulation from the three Parlin heirs (William H. Parlin, Jr., Clara Parlin and Alice (Parlin) Ingersoll). According the Canton Daily Register, the initial stipulation stated “in the event of the city failing to keep said building in good order and repair, and use same for public library and art building, then in that event the property is to revert back to us to the extent of said bequest.” Once these two issues were clarified, the dona
