LIB391726The idea of a library for the people of Owosso grew out of a literary club. During the Civil War, a group of women met regularly to work for the Union cause and to help provide for the soldiers. Once the war was over, they continued to meet together as a literary club. On May 5, 1867 the Ladies’ Library Association was formally organized. In August of 1910, the City of Owosso agreed to take over the library. In 1911, the Carnegie Corporation was contacted regarding the funds for a new building; land was donated by the Woodard family. Ground was broken for the building on September 2, 1913, and on October 28, 1913, the cornerstone was laid. On July 4, 1914, a formal dedication of the new building was held. Once the books could be moved into place, it was opened to the public. In 1994, The Owosso Public and Durand Memorial Libraries combined to form the Shiawassee District Library. A more detailed histo

Public library service began in Armada, Michigan, in 1901, when voters approved a ¼ mill tax levy. Elizabeth Pomeroy, Armada’s first librarian, was in charge of a modest opening-day collection of 87 volumes. As the library grew, the board of commissioners sought Carnegie funding to build a permanent, dedicated library building. In 1913, a grant of $8000 was awarded. The red brick and limestone library was built on church Street and opened 03 April 1915. [http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM7VXM_Armada_Free_Public_Library_Armada_Michigan] Z412335

LIB786246 "MANISTEE CITY LIBRARY In 1885 a group of Manistee ladies formed the Lakeside Club, whose primary goal was to create a library. In 1902 the club joined forces with the local literary society and successfully campaigned for a public library. The Andrew Carnegie Foundation funded the construction. The Manistee City Library opened in 1905. Designed by Port Huron architect George L. Harvey, the building, with its grand entrance pavilion, reflects Beaux Arts Classicism. The library is listed in the National Register of Historic Places."

LIB980280 Almost a full decade before Carnegie money found its way to the Copper Country, it was financial support from another capitalist with more local ties that brought the first dedicated library building to the region. That man was Alexander Agassiz, president of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. Like Carnegie, Agassiz was an immigrant from humble beginnings that by happenstance and hard work was able to take advantage of the industrial transformation of the country to garner himself great power and wealth. As president of the great C&H Empire, Agassiz leveraged his company’s wealth and prestige to keep his workforce as content as possible through an industrial governance known as paternalism. Towards that goal the company provided its workforce with cheap housing, public baths at its bathhouse, free healthcare through its hospital, and assisted in the erection of churches on company property. In 1896 the company added yet another fringe benefit to i

In 1903, the School Board applied for and received funding from the Carnegie Foundation for a new building to be located on Chicago Boulevard. The Carnegie Building was dedicated on February 10, 1905, as Tecumseh's public library. The site of the new library had formerly been the home of Benjamin L. Baxter, teacher, lawyer, Regent of the University of Michigan, and an early owner of the Tecumseh Herald. Mr. Baxter died two years prior to the opening of the new library, but, according to Historian Clara Waldron, many felt that the genius of this well-read man was a presiding spirit over the new endeavor. [LIB11056] - Peter White Public Library (PWPL) is located on the corner of Front and Ridge Streets near downtown Marquette, Michigan. Founded in 1871, the Peter White Public Library has served Marquette area residents for more than a century. The Peter White Public Library (PWPL) was founded by Peter White and located within the City Hall. At that time, he donated "the sum of $4,000 to found a public library in the city, to be under the government of five trustees and $1,000 to be expanded in the purchase of cases and in completing a room in the new city hall.” Mr. White always provided space for the Library. It was later housed in the First National Bank Building on the south corner of Front and Spring Streets and later still in the Thurber Block on Washington Street where BookWorld now stands. The school district library and Peter White's private library were combined on March 27, 1891, by a special act of the Michigan Legislature, to become the Peter White Public Libr
