The Osceola Library is one of those small town gems. The library is housed in what was once the town’s one-room schoolhouse. Built in 1885, this charming building was originally located along what is now the fourth fairway of the Waterville Valley Golf Course. It was moved to its present location at the corner of Boulder Path Way and West Branch Roads, across from Snows Mountain in 1955. The building initially functioned as a town meeting place and later as office space for the Waterville Company. After a fire destroyed the Waterville Inn in 1967, the town “library,” previously housed in the Inn, moved into the old school house and was christened the Osceola Library. A native of Meredith, New Hampshire, James Edwin Nichols (1845-1914) found success with business ventures in Boston and New York. As a managing partner Austin-Nichols (NYC), he supplied canned goods to small retail grocers across the Northeast and Midwest. In 1909, Nichols offered to build and endow a library for Center Harbor as a memorial to his parents. The holdings of the Center Harbor Library Association (1889), a private collection, became the core of the new Nichols Library. In accordance with his wishes, the Library was to be ‘free and open to all,’ which it remains to this day. [Website] [LIB11122]

[LIB11085] Just a line to let you know that I am alive... In 1886, John T. Perry was instrumental in forming the Exeter Library Company to raise money for a library building and in May of 1892, the town meeting appropriated $15,000 towards the construction of a library building. The new library was finished in 1894 at 47 Front Street, the current home of the Exeter Historical Society. It was designed like a Carnegie library on a smaller scale with a central rotunda and reading rooms on either side. It was built as a memorial to the 300 Exeter area men who served in the Civil War.
