[LIB11267] - When Buenos Aires became the capital of the Republic, the Public Library of Buenos Aires became the National Library and Antonio Wilde was appointed as its director. Wilde’s tenure did not last long due to his old age and death after a sudden illness. Paul Groussac followed his directorship. Groussac created a methodical classification system based on Brunet’s bibliographic model, undertook the cataloging of the manuscript collection, and published two remarkable journals: La Biblioteca, being one of the most prestigious literary journals, and Los Anales de la Biblioteca. [LIB11193] - Ground was broken for a Brooklyn central library on Prospect Park Plaza (Grand Army Plaza) in 1912. The design of the original architect Raymond Almirall called for a domed, four-story Beaux Arts building, similar in style to the nearby Brooklyn Museum. Escalating costs and political in-fighting helped slow construction throughout the decade. World War I and the Great Depression ensured that Almirall's building, whose Flatbush Avenue wing had been completed by 1929, would never be built. [Wikipedia]

Mosaic Mantel by Frederick Dielman. Representatives' Reading Room. HISTORY: In the center stands the Muse of History with recording pen and gold-clasped volume. In the panels are names of great historians: Herodotus. Thucydides. Polybius. Livy. Tacitus. Baeda. Comines. Hume. Gibbon. Niebuhr. Guizot. Ranke. Bancroft. Motley. On the left side sits Mythology with recording stylus and globe symbolic of the myths of the worlds. Beside her are a winged Sphinx and Pandora's box. On the right is the venerable figure of Tradition, and by her with a lyre sits a youthful poet who will sing the story that she tells. In the distance back of Mythology rise the Pyramids, back of History the Parthenon, and beyond Tradition the Colosseum. - From Practical Guide Library of Congress[LIB0370]
