[LIB8023] The library was organized in 1940 and is one of the outstanding libraries in the state of Kentucky. It is housed in the magnificent "Gardner" home and located at 6th and College Street. By 1960, the inventory of the library had grown to over 14,000 items, thanks in part to the Honorable Bertry Holifield. Following his death in 1957, he bequeathed his private library to the Graves County Public Library. The more rare selections of his private collection are still housed at our library. Also, a local business owner, O.G. Ducobu; who, when he died, left properties valued at several thousands of dollars to the library. Another milestone for the library about that time, was the interest and support of the Trustees of the Annie Gardner Foundation. They graciously offered the use of Edana Locus, the Ed Gardner home located on East College Street. Under the care and direction of Head Librarian, Mrs. J.E. Warren and the Library Trustees, Mrs

[LIB0171] - For one hundred years, folks traveling south on Main Street in Henderson have been admiring the white limestone and towering columns of the Henderson County Public Library. This institution first opened its doors to the public on August 1, 1904, after years of hard work by the publisher of the Henderson Journal, Edward Jonas. Mr. Jonas first began his campaign to bring a library to Henderson over a game of golf with the well-known philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Carnegie agreed to give the community the funding needed to build the library, if the community would purchase a suitable lot and would enact a tax that would cover the expenses related to running a library. It took Mr. Jonas until 1902 to get the backing of the local government, but soon things began to fall into place. Read more here. [LIB3613] The cornerstone was laid on Tuesday, August 5, 1902. The new Carnegie Library, constructed at a cost of $87,170.94, opened on March 16, 1904. The new library boasted plenty of space for books, a rotunda resembling the version in the Library of Congress, and a grand auditorium. The first program in the auditorium that evening was a performance of the Polyphonic Choral Society. The first books were circulated from the new library on March 28, 1904. At the time of the library's opening, there were six employees, with Mrs. Spears as head librarian. More than 1,000 people registered to borrow items at the new location. [www.kenton.lib.ky.us]

Thanks for this story from brokensidewalk.com, Louisville KY: The old Jefferson Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library is one of the original nine Carnegie libraries in Louisville. Built in 1912 and opened in 1913, the building now sits forlorn on one corner of Western Cemetery on Jefferson Street near 17th Street. [Read the rest of the story, including additional photos]

In December 1930, the Ashland Memorial Library Association was organized to establish a free public library for the city. In 1935 city commissioners adopted a resolution supporting construction of a library. The land was part of Crabbe School property that the School Board deeded. Public subscriptions supplemented the WPA grants to build the library. Ground was broken on April 22, 1935 and the building opened in December 1936. On October 7, 1936 the first meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Ashland Public Library was held in the mayor’s office. At that time, the Association transferred all assets to the new organization. The first book cataloged in the records of the new library was Miss Bishop by Bess Aldrich. [SOURCE] [LIB3060]

An older view and a contemporary view. Renamed Morehead State University. The library has also been renamed the Camden-Carroll Library and there appears to be a relatively new addition to the building (on the right). [LIB2416] The original part of the library was built in 1930 and officially opened on January 22, 1931. It was named the Johnson Camden Library after U. S. Senator Johnson Camden. It was designed to be the center of what is now the historical district of campus which is a crescent. Like all of the historic buildings on campus, the Library was designed by Joseph & Joseph Architects, and the architectural style is Collegiate Gothic. An interesting feature of the original building is the names of authors around the top of the building. In 1964-65 a new addition was built on the west side of the original building. The 5 story Julian Carroll Tower was built in 1978. It was named for Julian Carroll who was the Governor of Kentucky at that time. In 1980, the librar
