[LIB11177] - In 1897 Dr. Elbridge A. Thompson purchased the land and started construction of the Thompson Free Library in memory of his wife Lucia Eddy Thompson. Dr. Thompson was a surgeon for the Union Army for over three years, during the Civil War. He came to Dover in 1866 and practiced medicine and surgery here for the next 37 years, until he retired in 1903. On September 9, 1898 he presented the town of Dover with the key and the deed to the library. Dr. Thompson also established a trust fund for the purchase of books and reading materials. [Website]

[LIB11144] Still in use as a public library. The Stewart Free Library (1898), a gift to the town by Corinna-born Minneapolis millionaire Levi M. Stewart, was designed by Minneapolis architect William Harrison Grimshaw. The library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and contains well-preserved historic interiors as well as a majestic facade with clocktower. It resembles a mid-western county courthouse more than a typical small-town Maine library. The Corinna Union Academy educated students in the town from 1851 to 1968. [LIB11121] On July 23, 1900, a group of interested citizens met in the Congregational Church for the purpose of organizing a library. At this time our name was established as The Warren Free Public Library. At this time the library rented the front room from the Knights of Pythias. After the death of Moses and Eva Frances Mathews, money was left to build a building. We are now Warren Free Public Library in the M.R. Mathews Memorial Building. A Boston architect, Charles Loring, was chosen while William Hatch of Camden was selected as contractor, In August 1927, the building was begun and in August 1928, the dedication of the building was held. [LIB11026] A beauty of a photo taken from the library's website. “I wished to do something in the memory of my dear parents who were my ideal of all that is best and purest in life…” Thus spoken, William W. Brown, (1821-1911), dedicated a very special gift to his hometown of Clinton, Maine in remembrance of his parents Jonathan and Betsey (Michaels) Brown. That gift was Brown Memorial Library. [LIB10.036] Presque Isle citizens voted to build a library in 1907, using a $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Fund. Thomas H. Phair purchased a lot from the Dudley heirs for $1,000 on the southeast corner of Second and State Streets, and citizens raised an additional $937.50 for a small adjoining lot. The Presque Isle Library opened on July 1, 1908 with a collection of 2,000 books. Designed by Astle & Page of Houlton, Maine. It appears the library had significant alterations and no longer appears as it did. It is now the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library.

[LIB10.034] The library has had four different homes before reaching its final destination. It remained for some years in the Town Blocke, and when Charles O. Small opened a law office over T.H. Spear's tin-shop, he gave use of an alcove for the books of the library. After the burning of the shop, the library took up space in the new building on the same site erected by Dr. Hunnewell and Simon Stone. It remained there until it moved to the Blackwell Block in January of 1903, where it had remained until the construction of the octagonal building which houses the library today. In 1905 Mr. Carnegie agreed to donate $8,000 for a free public library with $800 to be raised annually for its maintenance and so the library plans began. The octagonal building, designed by Clifton S. Humphreys, was constructed in the heart of town, on the corner of Old Point Avenue and Pleasant Street. It was completed in 1906, and ready for occupancy in January, 1907. [Website

[LIB9980] At the time this postcard was published, it claimed that this library "has the largest number of books per capita in the country." The Bangor Public Library is the public library serving Bangor, Maine. The library was first founded in 1830 as the Bangor Mechanic Association's private library. By 1911, the library's collection had grown to 70,000 books, yet all but 29 were burned in a great fire that destroyed most of the Bangor Business District. The library reopened in May 1911 with the handful of saved books and the 1300 others which had been on loan. The present library building, designed by the Boston architectural firm Peabody and Stearns, opened its doors in 1913. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/jewishfan/7077793819/]
