[LIB11261] Towards the end of the 19th century, Groton’s need for a new library building became more evident. Current and former residents of the town made bequests to the Library. Donors included Willard Dalrymple, Augustus Fletcher, and Luther Blood. Mrs. Charlotte A. L. Sibley offered to give the town a site for the new library building on Main Street, along with $4,000 towards its construction. The amount of her gift was gradually increased until it reached $12,000, about half of the building’s eventual cost. Mrs. Sibley continued to support the Library until the time of her death in 1902. The new library was designed pro bono by Boston architect Arthur Rotch, a grand-son of Abbott Lawrence, the original grantor of funds for the establishment of Groton’s library. Total cost of the land, building and furnishings was $27,500, of which $15,000 was allocated by the town. At its official dedication on May 18, 1893, the building

[LIB11129] The library you see today began in 1808 as a modest collection of about 100 books in the home of Samuel Morse, just up the street from today’s building. Thirty-nine years later, that early circulating library evolved into the Citizen’s Library, and accumulated 425 books by 1852. Natick resident Henry Wilson, the country’s vice president during Ulysses S. Grant’s second term, was one of the original shareholders of the Citizen’s Library. The town stepped in with funds for books and a librarian as well as a room to house the collection in 1857. [Website]

[LIB11128] There is ample evidence that the founders of the Holyoke Public Library were fully aware of the far-reaching consequences that a library can have in the life of a community. In dedicating the new building in 1902, President Whiting referred to it as the "People’s College”, and added that: "A library is as much a part of the intellectual life of a community as its schools, and should be supported generously as part of our educational system. Within these walls you will find authors devoted to literature, arts and science, and they are free to any who will ask. We can say to the citizens of Holyoke you have only to ask here and you will find knowledge to make your life useful and happy”.

[LIB11108] Waltham Public Library traces its roots to 1865 when the town created what was called the Free Town Library. It was formed from the merger of three older libraries: the Waltham Social Club, the Rumford Institute, and the Agricultural Library Association. The new library was located on the top floor of a bank building, later, in 1880, moving to new quarters at the corner of Charles and Moody Streets. It took a generous benefactor, Francis Buttrick, to give the town the building now in use. He started out as a carpenter in town in 1838, eventually starting his own business and purchasing a lumberyard in 1857. He made his fortune in real estate and was able to give the money for a new library building. In 1913 the planning committee decided that the new library's site would be where the old Central House stood on Main Street. It went back to 1679 and was run as a tavern by a David Smith. Loring and Leland, architects in Boston, were chosen in 1914 for the design of the new
