This is the library in my town where I grew up. I spent many hours there exploring the printed word. There are many fond memories associated with this library, one of the reasons I eventually became a librarian. The building pictured was demolished and a new library was built. [LIB11275]

[LIB11227] - Records have indicated that the Basking Ridge Library Company housed its collection at the School House, known as the Brick Academy, for it was these same men who funded construction of this building in 1809 who were the founders of the Basking Ridge Library Company. A paper researched by Mariana M. Gibson, library director in the 1960s, maintains the library company actively flourished through Dr. Finley's regime or until 1817, as stock was issued to Joel Dayton in 1811, and book purchases in the name of the company are on record in 1815. The library company is mentioned twice in land sales during this time. Also recorded is a building mortgage of $250, dated April 2, 1810, by the trustees of this corporation to the trustees of the Basking Ridge Congregation (Presbyterian Church). People from Vealtown (Bernardsville) who attended church in Basking Ridge borrowed books from this library. [Website]

1905 Free Public Library, Perth Amboy, New Jersey From 1888, the Library has been housed in five different buildings. Our Library was built on its present site on Jefferson Street, in 1901, on land donated by J. C. Mc Coy, of the Raritan Copper Works and constructed with the aid of a $20,000 grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, a $1,000 donation from Adolph Lewisohn to purchase new books, and an agreement by the City to provide for the Library’s upkeep. [LIB11196] - At the first meeting of that Board, a letter from Andrew Carnegie was read offering $50,000.00 for the construction of a library building if the City would provide a site and maintenance of not less than $5,000.00 a year for the library. The land, at the corner of Munn Avenue and Freeway Drive East (then Main Street), was purchased at a cost of $22,182.00, and the building was designed by Kent, Jardine, and Kent in an unusual fan-shape to make maximum use of the corner lot. [LIB11130] Probably the 1920s. In 1923 Mrs. Walter Pharo, in memory of her husband’s parents, Archelaus Ridgway Pharo and Louisa Willits Pharo - the founders of Beach Haven, and of her late husband Walter, presented the board of the library with a proposal to build, entirely at her own expense, a new library for the town two blocks away from the church on a corner lot owned by her at Third and Beach. It was accepted immediately. R. Brognard Okie, one of Philadelphia’s finest architects, was contacted by Mrs. Pharo. He chose as his model a Pennsylvania farm house - not an early lifesaving station as has often been said. [Website]

[LIB10394] - Eldridge R. Johnson Park, and the former Cooper Library which stands at the park’s center, represent one of the most significant and unique cultural, historic, and artistic resources in the City of Camden and the State of New Jersey. The site has been designated as a State and Federal Historic Landmark based not only on the elements which remain from the peak of its use in the early 19th century, but also due to its importance as a reflection of a period of Camden’s industrial history. Local inventor and philanthropist Eldridge R. Johnson, whose modern phonograph helped launch RCA, donated the Neo-Classical Cooper Branch Library and surrounding Johnson Park to the City of Camden. Built between 1914 and 1930, the complex occupies an entire block near Camden's waterfront on the Rutgers-Camden campus. When it opened in 1918, the site became southern New Jersey's foremost cultural and recreational center. Today, the library houses the Walt Whitman Arts Ce

[LIB10.019] As you probably know, our present building was a gift of Dr. Mildreth Worth-Pinkham, but with the stipulation that it be used only as a library. In 1988, with the alternative of remaining in the tiny old building (now Joe Sanzari’s offices), we accepted. However, the Borough has no clear title to the property as a result of the bequest restrictions. We know from the results of the 2009 survey that (especially) the stairs and the parking situation are legitimate concerns, but the options open to the Trustees have been limited. Nevertheless, we are exploring those options with the objective of providing the Borough with the kind of library facilities our town deserves. [Website]

[LIB8028] Addressed to Princeton, New Jersey. The address has been redacted for privacy. Completed in the spring of 1961, the facility was named Friendship Library in honor of the bond shared between FDU trustees and supporters Samuel J. Silberman and Fairleigh S. Dickinson, whose donations made the project possible. Then, Sammartino “gave carte blanche to the librarian as far as books were concerned.” By 1962, the collection had grown to exceed 34,000 volumes. [Website]
