[LIB11068] - In April, 1903, C.J. Biery, superintendent of schools, wrote to James Bertram, private secretary to Andrew Carnegie. After three petitions, Carnegie agreed to furnish $7,500 if the community provided a suitable site and assumed maintenance of the structure at a cost of no less than $750 a year. Later, these amounts were raised to $8,000 and $800 a year. The board of education levied a one mill tax on property holders to satisfy Carnegie's conditions. The present site was purchased in January, 1905 for $1,100; and on May 26, 1906, the Wauseon Public Library opened with 1,800 volumes, donated from the Citizens Library Association. [Website]

[LIB10742] - When Spear Library was completed in 1885, the faculty decided that it was an appropriate time to modernize the library's system of organization. Nine years earlier, Melvil Dewey's method of classification and Cutter's system of cataloging had been published. In 1885, the faculty voted to adopt Dewey's system. They commissioned Azariah Smith Root, who had graduated from Oberlin in 1884 and was then a law student at Boston University, to undertake the classification of Oberlin's library and establish a card catalog. Root completed the project in one year and then left to attend Harvard Law School. When he had been at Harvard for one year, Oberlin invited him back to serve as its first professional librarian. [LIB10.032] In June of 1958 Mr. O. C. Topky, a local businessman, donated the money to construct a library in the Ashtabula Harbor. City property on 1633 Walnut Boulevard, across the street from Harbor High School, was selected as the site for this endeavor. In August 1959 the Topky Memorial Library, a one story 50' by 100' building, opened to serve the adult community. Soon afterwards materials from the Children's Library also were moved into the Topky Library, and the two services were re-integrated. The Topky Library building remained fairly unchanged with only minor changes until the 1984 addition. In June 1967, air conditioning was installed, and in August 1971 a parking lot was surfaced. Office space and a new doorway were created in 1980. [Website] [http://www.harbortopky.lib.oh.us/history]

[LIB9865] - The first building on the present site was a small Methodist chapel. At its inception, Woodland Library was described in the 1904 Annual Report as: “a one story colonial structure of brick, with stone trimmings, in a setting of green lawn, flowers, and shade trees.” The entrance opened into a wainscoted vestibule with a leaded glass partition. In the corridor hung Ongania’s St. Mark’s. In 1957 the building burned down and was rebuilt to open in 1961. The new Woodland Branch is a low-slung modern one-story building.

[LIB7824] - A beautiful handcolored vintage postcard, c1907. The cornerstone was finally laid on August 18, 1903 and speeches abounded - or to quote a local newspaper, attendees listened to "Eloquent Addresses and Fine Singing." Mayor F. J. King reportedly used this platform to state that there were "always evil influences abroad which had to be counteracted in some way otherwise than the law. Next to the church, the free Public Library is the most powerful institution for uplifting society in the land." Claiming that the only way to conquer evil was to strengthen the good, he implored citizens to "strive to make the Public Library a lasting benefit to every citizen." [website]

[LIB7617] To provide a site for the building, Mr. Edwin Brown donated $5,000.00 of which $2,000.00 was used to pay for the site and the remainder used toward furnishings and books. The village had agreed to pay $800.00 or 10% of the Carnegie gift for yearly maintenance of the building and the cost of a librarian and janitor service. The library was named Dorcas Carey Public Library after Mr. Brown's wife's mother, Dorcas, who was the wife of the honorable John Carey, founder of Carey. The construction of the building was completed in 1906. The dedication ceremony was held at Snyder's Opera House on October 19, 1906. Miss Mable Newhard was the first librarian. [Website] The original building is still in use as a library.
