He wears only mens boxers or nothing, basically for the same reason you have given - comfort.
He finds boxers comfortable under either long or short pants, make sure you buy the correct size for you; they are meant to be fairly loose.
Medically speaking men's boxers are better too, they allow the air to circulate keeping men's testes cool...
