Farmers Market: the Atlanta Georgia (Forest Park) Farmer's Market - a Guide and Listing of Vendors

The Atlanta State Farmers Market

Also commonly called the Georgia State farmer's market or the Forest Park Farmer's Market

I think you will find this is the best guide to the vendors at the Atlanta Farmer's market. This is the huge farmer's market in Georgia - a REAL farmer's market, with acres of stalls, to which the farmers bring truckloads of produce every morning.  At 150 acres, and first opened in 1958, the Atlanta Market is considered one of the largest of its kind in the world. It has a garden center with a nursery, wholesale and retail sales, and is a major distribution point for fresh produce in the Southeast and throughout the country. The Forest Park Farmer's Market also has a welcome center and USDA Federal-State office. 

NOTE: it is very hard to any current information from any of these vendors without actually going there and asking them.  Most of them do not answer their phones.  So if you go and get any information (prices, what's a good deal, quality, etc., please write me .

Their prices are good but shop around and haggle; don't buy from the first stand you see, as prices vary greatly.

UPDATES

Apples:  Summary, in 2024 apple prices are 150% higher than in 2019.

I can usually get apples there for great prices.  I expect a bushel (42 lbs) of apples in September-October of 2023 to go for $40 to $80 , with most of them being in the $55 range.  This follows the post COVID price increases and inflation of everything. Vendors told me they expect the prices of apples to go way up in December.

In October 2022, the prices jumped dramatically. the price per bushel ranged from a super bargain on Fuji's at $25/bushel to $55 for Honeycrisp, which were almost all gone. Galas, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious were all about $35/bushel. . One bushel is about 42 pounds. I did get some Gala's at $30/bushel and Rae (a new Red Delicious variant, similar to a Cosmic Crisp at $40 a bushel. Besrt prices were in Shed 7.
Each bushel makes about 12 quarts of applesauce ( see this page for how to make applesauce with a Foley Food Mill, KitchenAid or Oster, etc   or this page if you have no equipment : 
Compare this to past years: In late September, 2019,

I found several vendors with apples ranging from $18 to $44 a bushel.  The $28 to $36 bushels were common.  Go to Shed 9 and 10 for the best prices (and quality) A number of vendors were sell apples at $24 a bushel, which I think is a TERRIBLE price! Avoid them. Best prices were on smaller sized Gala's - perfect for applesauce. and Fuji's were typically $20 to $32 per bushel.  Most expensive were Honeycrisp. Of course, prices change from week to week, due to weather, what's coming in, and market conditions.

Tomatoes : Common prices were $30 to $40 for a 20 lb box.  Quality was excellent

You can find almost any fruit or vegetable (in season) there. Examples are tomatoes, corn, okra, avocados, beets, oranges, grapefruit, peppers, grapes, muscadines, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, etc.  There are also butchers, nurseries, and other products. Open: While they are technically open 364 days a year (every day except Christmas Day), 24 hours per day, that does not mean that vendors are always there and open to sell anything in the stalls. Each vendor can set their own days and hours. On the weekends, the vendors are typically only there from early (6 am) until Saturday at 12 noon , so get there early! Few are open at all on Sunday. During the week, they seem to be open from 6 am until 5 pm. Many of the vendors are open at 5:30 am! They are effectively closed on Sunday.  The stalls area is always open; I'm giving you the times that farmers are actually there with their Produce; remember, they can set their own hours, different from the market facility itself.

Prices: It appears as though the USDA is posting typical prices for the Atlanta area. They tell you the size of the box, bag or carton, then the price range (without dollar signs. For example, for Cameo apples in a bushel carton, it says: "Cameo 72s 26.00", which means $26 per bushel carton (a bushel is about 42 lbs). I believe "72s" refers to a size of the apple.
