【Introduction】 イ I’d like to talk about the topic, “Should English be taught at primary schools? ” ロ English is an international language. The language is an indispensable business tool. The ability to communicate in English will be more important. Thailand, South Korea, China and Taiwan already teach English in primary school. According to a survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, more than 90 percent of elementary schools already hold activities for children to listen to and speak English. ハ I think English should be taught at primary schools. I’d like to stress two reasons. 【Body】 「Case1」 イ You can expect a synergistic effects of a connection between English and Japanese education. ロ Through learning English, you can acquire skills such as debating skills and reading abilities even in Japanese. These skills are common to any language. ハ I had not been good at making a speech in Japanese before I passed Eiken English examination. But when I passed the examination, I found that I was able to make a speech logically in Japanese. 「Case2」 イ Learning English can develop a positive attitude to communicate with other people and other cultures. ロ The earlier you get used to foreigners or foreign cultures, the more you are receptive to them. ハ A child in my neighborhood seems not have any prejudice against foreigners. He seems to have got lots of good effects from native English-speaking teaching assistants at school. The number of native English-speaking teaching assistants would become 23,000 if each primary school had one native assistant, though the number is only about 6,000 now. They will play a major role in fostering communication skills with other people and other cultures. 【Conclusion】 Therefore, I believe English should be taught at primary schools.
