According to a new study, a popular therapy that uses shock waves to pulverize(粉砕する) kidney stones(腎臓結石) significantly increases the risk for diabetes and high blood pressure later in life. Patients who underwent lithotripsy(衝撃波療法) developed diabetes at almost 4 times the rate of those who were treated by other methods. Researchers hypothesize that the therapy damages insulin-producing cells in the pancreas(膵臓), a gland(腺) through which the shock waves may pass.
