横浜美術館の「セザンヌ主義」で紹介されていた、セザンヌが誰だったかにあてた手紙の抜粋。とても参考になったので、床に座り込んで学生のようにメモしてきてしまいました。

I progress very slowly,
for nature reveals herself to me in very complex ways;
and the progress needed is endless.
One must look at the model and feel very exactly
and also express oneself distinctly and with force

私は仕事をきわめてゆっくり進めます。
自然はきわめて複雑で、また成し遂げられる進歩は無限にあります。
モデルをよく見、きわめて正しく感じ取らねばなりません。
そして、さらに品位を持って、力強く自己を表現しなければなりません。

... nature for use men is more depth than surface
whence the need to introduce into our light vibrations,
represented by the red and yellows,
a sufficient amout of blueness to give the feel of air.

われわれ人間にとって自然は表面としてよりも、むしろ深さとしてあります。
だから赤と黄で表される光の振動の中に
大気を感じさせるために十分な量の青を導き入れる必要があります。

この言葉は Sara も読んでいて、「なるほど～」と思ったらしい。
そうか… 青を取り入れればいいのか…

進歩を果たすためには自然しかありません。そして自然に接して眼がしつけられます。
見つめ、仕事をすることで、眼は求心力を持ちます。
1 個のオレンジ、リンゴ、球、頭部にもひとつの頂点があり、
その頂点は常に - 光、影、彩色する感覚のおそるべき効果にかかわらず -
われわれの眼に最も近いものです。物の周縁は水平線上に置かれた中心に向かって逃れていきます。

everything brought into proper perspective so that each side of an object or a plane
is directed towards central points.
Line parallel to the horizon give breadth, wheather it is a section of nature or,
if you prefer, of the show which the Pater Omnipotens Aeterne Peus spreads out before our eyes. Lines perpendicular to this horizon give depth

自然を円筒形、球形、円錐形によって扱い、すべてを遠近法のうちにおきなさい。
つまり、ひとつの面、ひとつの物の各局面がひとつの中心点に向かうようにしなさい。
水平線と平行な線は広がりを、つまり自然の一断面を与えます。
あるいはお望みながら、全知全能にして永遠の父なる神がわれわれの眼前に繰り広げる光景の
一断面といってもいいでしょう。この水平線に対して垂直な線は深さを与えます。

横浜美術館での「セザンヌ主義」最終日、行ってまいりました。
でもね、なんだか、うーん･･･モヤモヤしています。不完全燃焼。

一番気に入らなかったのが人が多すぎたこと。せっかくフリーランスっていう自由の身なんだから平日に行くべきでした…
