本の詩から～愛について～

Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him，
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him，
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He thereshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneaks you until you are pliant;

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know
the secrets of your heart， and in that knowledge become
a fragment of Life’s heart.

But if in your fear you wound seek only love’s peace and
love’s pleasure，
Then it is better for you that you cover you nakedness
and pass out of love’s threshing-floor，
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh，
but not all of your laughter， and weep，
but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed，
For love is suffcient unto love.

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires，
let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings
its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for
another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your
heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

　愛があなたをさし招いたなら、愛に従いなさい。
　たとえ、その道がどんなに厳しく険しくても。
　愛の翼があなたがたを包んだなら、愛に身を委ねなさい。
　たとえ、その翼に潜む刃が、あなたがたを傷つけても。
　愛があなたがたに語りかけたなら、愛を信じなさい。
　たとえ、その声が、庭を荒らす北風のように、
　あなたがたの夢を打ち砕いても。

　愛はあなたがたを、麦の束のように刈り取り、
　あなたがたを打って、裸にし、ふるって、殻を取り、ひいて、
　白く粉にし、練って、しなやかにする。

　愛はこれだけのことを、あなたがたのうちに、
　あなたがたのためにするのです。
　あなたがたが自分の心の奥の謎をさとり、
　このさとりのうちに生命の心の一片（ひとひら）となるために。

　しかし、それを恐れ、愛の安らぎと楽しみだけを求めるのなら、
　むしろあなたがたの裸を被い、この愛の麦打ち場を避けて、
　あの季節のない世界へ行くがよい。
　そこでは笑っても心底から笑えず、
　泣いても流れるのは本当の涙ではない。

　愛は愛自身のほかの何も与えることなく、
　愛自らしか受けることしかできない。
　愛は所有せず、また所有させない。
　愛は愛だけで充分なのですから。

　愛の望みはただひとつ。愛自身を満たすことです。
　しかし、もしあなたがたが、愛していて、
　どうしてもなお望みがあるというのなら、
　その望みはこのようなものであるように。
　融けて、夜の間も自分の歌を歌っているせせらぎのようになること。
　愛のあまりの優しさに苦しむのを知ること。
　愛を自分で解釈して傷つくこと。
　そして、自由な、喜びで溢れた心で血を流すこと。
　夜明けに目覚め、飛び立つ思いで、愛の新しい一日のために
　感謝をささげること。
　昼下がりには静かに休らい、愛の恍惚を思い出して味わうこと。
　夕暮れには感謝に満ちて家路をたどること。
　そして、心では愛する人のために祈り、唇では賛美の歌を歌いながら
　眠りにつくこと。
