how to study "Blackie gets lost"

At first they saw a picture of Blackie and thought about this story. I asked some questions before reading "Blackie gets lost".
What are those? (pointing trees and birds)
What's this?(pointing a butterfly and a waterfall.)
How many trees are there?
How many birds are there?
My students wondered why these trees have eyes and
why Blackie's eyes are not round as usual.

I read the story in English and Japanese explaining some words .I said "Repeat after me "after explaining words or important sentences.

They repeated these words and sentences to memorize.

sunny,wood,birds,happy,small,blue,yellow,butterfly,nose.dark,tired,big,trees,sad,angry,faces,thirsty,sound , water

Let's go to the waterfall.(Yes,let's.)
I can drink.
I can sleep.

girldog

After hearing explanation of the story my students wrote line under these words and sentences reading together. (It was not easy for children aged 7 or 8.)

They could momorized these words and sentences.

I asked some questions again.

What color is the butterfly in this story?(They coloured butterflies as they liked. They are pink, green, blue and red. So I asked "What colour is your butterfly?")

Does Blackie like big trees?

Is he dreaming?

Is he lost in the wood?

Does he drink some water?

Does he have bad friends?

We enjoyed studying "Blackie gets lost".
I thought my students can repeat after me well but they are not good at answering my questions. They only answered "YES." or "NO". They need more practice to answer questions.

I asked students aged 11 or 12 these questions.

Where is Blackie?

What does Blackie hear in the field?

Is Blackie happy in the field?

What does Blackie see on his nose?

Does he like walking in the wood?

What sound does he hear in the wood?

Is he happy in the wood?

How does he feel in the wood?

They could read most parts of this story but it wasn't easy for them to answer these questions .
