DOO-WOPコンピの世界どれだけのDOO-WOPコンピがこの世に存在するのか、見当もつきません。ちゃんとしたプレスＣＤから個人製作のブートまで、探せば探すほど泥沼の世界のように感じます。何千というグループを網羅させるような詳しいサイトは、本当に、驚くほど詳しい。音源が多数アップされていて全編試聴が可能なファンサイトも幾らでもある。そんなDOO-WOPの世界を僕などが何を紹介できるのだろう。コンピを紹介出来たとして、星の数ほどある中でほんの氷山の一角。そしてコレが紹介するべきものとして最適なものなのか、数あるコンピの中でベストなものなのかも全然判らない。
何のガイドにもなりそうにありませんが、音楽として敷居が高いものだとは全く思いません。気軽に誰でも楽しめる、素晴らしいジャンルだと思います。一応、個人で聴けた音源のリスニング日記ですので、自分のために綴ります。なお、まだこんな凄いDOO-WOPのコンピがある、サイトがあるなどといった情報お待ちしております。

The Birth of Doo Wop (1948-1955)と銘打たれる一枚目。ゴスペル、ジャズコーラスなどを経て５０年代に入るとドゥーワップのスタイルが確立し、星の数ほどのグループが生まれ、そして消えていったそうです。その最初期、ポップスにおけるアイデアの原石のような名作、名演が楽しめます。コメントのし様がないくらい、どの曲も素晴らしい。ドゥーワップ入門編としてこれ以上のものはない、最適なボックスセットの一枚目。
１のオリオールズや２のレイヴンズなんかはDOO WOP界草の根的存在。全てはここから始まった。特にレイヴンズのベースヴォーカル、Jimmy Ricksは強烈な個性で他者を圧倒している気が致します。この深く引き締まったベースで甘く語りかけるリードパートはなんとも聴き応えあり。ビーチボーイズも幻のスマイルで手本にした、４のクロウズ。またビーチボーイズの「LITTLE DEUCE COUPE」"Ballad of Ole' Betsy"では７のコーラスが引用されるなど、この辺のアーリードゥーワップとビーチボーイズの因果は深い。幾つもの曲で影響を感じられます。
１１のコーズは 「Dangerous Doo Wop Vol.1」 にも収録の底抜けに明るく楽しいポップナンバー。後半の張りのあるホーンの乱れ打ちも堪りません。１５のムーングロウズの出世作もロマンティックな最高の出来。バドゥ、バドゥと静かにビートするコーラスから、脈打ち熱がこもる後半の盛り上がりが凄い。１８のwrens(なんて読むのでしょう？？)は後にカーディナルズがカヴァーする荒削りながらも傑作のドゥーワップ。お茶目ではち切れた魅力ならカーディナルズが上手でしょうか。１９も本当に良く出来たバラード、ナツメグス。
２０のプラターズはＣＭなどで誰でも聴いたことがあるのではないでしょうか。５０年代から現在まで、幾つかの分家も含めつつ活動する老舗中の老舗。３連符の艶やかに流れるリズムと、トニーウィリアムズの美声が最高の聴きもの。２２のターバンズはターバンを巻いた４人組だそうで、ユニークな出で立ち乍らもやはり実力は本物。この曲はほんのりラテン風味で他とは異国な心地が致しますが、フィラデルフィアの人達。２５のヴァレンタインズは、ロッキンなリズムで踊れる楽しいナンバーです。
