　　　　ブログ上で敬愛するGKhenさんが先日のブログで菅原道真の和歌を英訳している。

こち吹かば　にほひおこせよ　梅の花　主なしとて　春な忘れそ

皆それぞれに趣のある訳である。

私が注目したのは「にほひおこせよ」と「はるなわすれそ」の部分である。
前者は春風（東風）に載せて毎年都の香りを西（大宰府）に運んでくださいの意と思われ、
「おこす」は「起こす」ではなく「遣す」で、「人から人へ何かを運ぶ」の意味だと
東風が運べるのは都の西側に限られる。
つまりこの部分はこれから毎年春が来たら「お前（道長邸の特定の梅の木）の香りを
大宰府に運んでおくれ」と別れの挨拶をしている情景だろう。

後者は”not forget"よりは”remember"がよりふさわしいと思われる。
個人的には私が初めて出会った単語の"oblivious"という単語が一番ふさわしく思われる。
辞書によると「忘れ去ること」「忘却」であるが「・・・に気が付いていないこと」と、
裏読みしなければならない奥行きの深い言葉は和歌にふさわしい。
今でも覚えているが高２の英作文の試験で、「忘却とは忘れ去ることである、
忘れ得ずして忘却を誓う悲しさよ」を英訳せよというのがあった。
これはその時間になると女湯がガラガラになると言われた当時のラジオドラマ「君の名は」
の冒頭のフレーズであった。その時この単語を知っていればかなり点数が上がったことだろう。
