昔、バルークのESLに通ってるころ同じような宿題が出た。 その時は確かpiss offを使って短文を作るというものだった。 私は「A baby pissed off in the diaper.」と書いた。 「赤ちゃんがおむつにおしっこした」という意味だと思ったのだ。 ところがpiss off には裏の意味があって、 「つぶす」とか「だいなしにする」という意味があったのだ。 そんなことは辞書に載ってない。 もちろん、先生に大笑いされたのはいうまでもない。 恥をかいたことはいつまでも忘れないものだ。 そう、これからも大いに恥をかこう!
