The Japanese are notoriously eclectic when it comes to religion.
To celebrate the New Year and other milestones they invariably visit a Shinto
shrine, but they might very well be married in a Christian ceremony, and most
will have a Buddhist funeral. In all cases, we are worshipping the same divine
power. If our feelings are pure, what does it matter what from the worship
or the object of worship takes?
The seven Gods of Fortune take this religious Catholicism, or inclusiveness,
even further. Only one is originally Japanese, and he plays the role of
" foreinger." But their origins are irrelevant. The functions they represent
are crucial. From the point of view of the spirit world, nationality, skin, and
age are superficial attributes. The important thing is spiritual essence, and
the Seven Gods of Fortune represent key properties of the divine.
