Stonehenge builders' houses found
A huge ancient settlement used by the people who built Stonehenge has been found, archaeologists have said. Excavations at Durrington Walls, near the legendary Salisbury Plain monument, uncovered remains of ancient houses. People seem to have occupied the sites seasonally, using them for ritual feasting and funeral ceremonies. In ancient times, this settlement would have housed hundreds of people, making it the largest Neolithic village ever found in Britain. Braces 'may not boost happiness'
Having braces to correct crooked teeth as a child does not improve mental well-being or quality of life in adulthood, a UK study suggests. A 20-year study found that orthodontic treatment had little positive impact on future psychological health. The researchers said more funding was needed for children with severe teeth problems instead of focusing on those with minor irregularities. The study is published in the British Journal of Health Psychology.(BBC News)*****brace（歯列矯正器）crook（曲げる、鉤でひっかける）orthodontic（歯科矯正学）irregularity（不ぞろいの）＊＊＊＊＊土曜日、早速予告で感動していた「幸せのちから」(The pursuit of happiness)を観に行きました。ウィル・スミスが街のどこかに書かれたhappynessを指してスペルが違うhappinessだよ皆、ちゃんと勉強しなきゃだめだよ！と訴えています。あっ、そうだったと何気に覚えていた単語にちゃんと勉強しなきゃと熱が入りそうです。仕事がうまくいかず、お金もなくなり家族も皆幸せから遠のいていきます。何にもかも失っても彼には息子がいます。頭がいいという才能、この武器と共に一生懸命走り回ります。６ヶ月間のただ働きの末に待っていたもの、皆が認めてくれた最高の贈り物、幸せへの道、仕事をもらえることができたのです。最後のシーン早く感動させてよと待っていたものですから一粒の涙がきらり、もし息子がいなかったら彼はあんなにまで頑張れなかったのではないでしょうか。

Vehicle fumes 'stunt lung growth'
Living too near a busy road could stunt a child's lung development, US research involving 3,677 children suggests. Children who lived within 500 metres of a major road, such as a motorway, were shown to have lung impairment in tests. Many children live and go to schools near to busy roads and could be at risk, the University of Southern California authors warn in The Lancet. Experts already know toxic traffic fumes can trigger lung conditions such as asthma. It snowed in London!!!!と人参を加えた雪だるまの写真などが送ってきました。

Cynicism link with heart disease
Being cynical can increase the risk of heart disease, US researchers claim. A study of 6,814 people found that cynical distrust was associated with signs of inflammation which in turn increase the risk of heart disease. Chronic stress and depression were also found to be associated with higher levels of certain inflammatory markers in the blood. The Archives of Internal Medicine study suggests cynical people are more likely to lead unhealthy lifestyles. Researchers from the University of Michigan asked participants to fill out a questionnaire that assessed a person's risk of chronic stress or depression. (BBC News)*****cynicism（皮肉癖、シニシズム）inflammation（激怒）inflammatory（怒りをかきたてる）＊＊＊＊＊きょう、フィットネスで知り合いになった人は数ヶ月祖母の家で過ごすということできょうから３ヶ月ほど入会された三重県の伊賀市（大阪から１時間ほど）から来ている人でした。あちら方面のことを色々聞いて家に帰って借りていた本「動物園の暗号」（有栖川有栖著）の最初の「やけた線路の上の死体」を読んでいるとちょうど彼女の住む辺りが舞台になっていたのでmysterious。それにしてもこの書き出しがおもしろく、列車に乗って友達の紹介から始まって自分もそこにいるかのような錯覚に、またこの著者がそのまま名前で出てくるのでリアルで舞台もそのまま使ってあるので楽しく読めます。それに知らない漢字や日本語があり（俯瞰(bird’s-eye view鳥瞰図)、鉄拳制裁(fist)、猟奇（bizarre）、鉄道の作りなども勉強になりました。

Fibre 'lowers breast cancer risk'
Pre-menopausal women who eat large amounts of fibre could halve their breast cancer risk, a UK study has suggested. The University of Leeds researchers, who studied 35,000 women, found those who ate 30g of fibre a day had half the risk of those who ate less than 20g. They said women should try to increase their fibre intake. Experts said the International Journal of Epidemiology study was more evidence of the benefits of a healthy diet. (BBC News)*****halve（半分に削減する）＊＊＊＊＊「頭のよい子が育つ家」（四十万靖著）を読んでみると頭のよい子はあのサザエさんの家のような家庭から生まれるらしいです。そしてその子供達はドラエモンの漫画を読んでいるというデータがでたとか。また家族と仲良く、よく食べ、よく遊ぶ、実に健康的なお子さんばかりそして近所や兄弟、ご両親などとうまくお付き合いできているそうです。このデータは有名中学に合格された家庭から取り、家庭の様子や家の間取りを紹介されています。よい子たちは食事をする部屋など父母のいる部屋で勉強をしています。だから個室はいらないということです。家族ときょう勉強したことを皆で話し合うこと。まずは家族とコミュニケーションができることから話すスキルなどを磨き覚えられるということでしょうか。アメリカでは最近、３R(reading writing arithmetic)の重要性から３X(explore exchange express)へ力を入れているとか。

Early warning test for dyslexia
A 10-minute screening test to identify pre-school children who might be dyslexic has been developed by language experts at University College London. The test will be used by children from the age of three and a half upwards, says Professor Heather van der Lely. But Dr John Rack of Dyslexia Action urged caution about the risk of "false alarms" from short screening tests. Dyslexia is a condition that can cause difficulty with reading, writing and spelling. There was snow on the ground so it was cold, but we enjoyed meditating with the monks and spending time at the cemetery there. Erica and I want to thank you again for helping us, especially translating from Japanese to English. というメールが来ました。ScottとSchott名前が似ていてびっくり。

Dog-owners 'lead healthier lives'
If you want to live a healthier life get a dog, research suggests. The companionship offered by many pets is thought to be good for you, but the benefits of owning a dog outstrip those of cat owners, the study says. A psychologist from Queen's University, Belfast, said dog owners tended to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Writing in the British Journal of Health Psychology, she says that regular 'walkies' may partly explain the difference. (BBC News)*****companionship（仲間づきあい、交わり）own（所有する）outstrip（上回る）＊＊＊＊＊「習い事で生まれ変わる４２の方法（42 ways to be a new man with enrichment lessons）」（中谷彰宏著）の中で彼は中学時代速記を勉強されたせいか集中力が身につきなんでも早くできるようになったらしいです。すぐに生かせない習い事ほど役に立つなどと習い事を薦めています。柔道やスキーは転び方のこつから学ぶそうです。また子供より大人が習い事をしようとあります。母親が料理教室に行くと家族の会話が増えるらしい。習い事はどんな料理を覚えたかということよりもそこから派生したことのほうが沢山変化を生み、ストレス解消もでき、人生も変わるからだそうです。私は昨年始めた習い事、多かったけれどどれも楽しかった思い出ばかりです。それに市民講座は安いので助かります。２月で終わるものもいくつかあります。来年度は何を新しく始めようかなと今から楽しみです。

Folic acid boosts elderly brains
Folic acid supplements can improve the memory and brain power of ageing brains, research shows. Men and women aged 50 to 70 who took daily supplements had similar mental abilities to contemporaries almost five years younger, The Lancet study found. But experts said this benefit must be balanced against other risks - an increase in folic acid can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency in older people. This type of anaemia can cause serious health problems, like nerve damage.(BBC News)*****folic acid（葉酸、貧血の特効薬）mask（隠す）deficiency（不足、欠乏）anaemia（貧血）＊＊＊＊＊「アフリカ、南アメリカの鉄道」（秋山芳弘著）を読んでみると、空中都市マチュピチュへ行くのに交通手段は鉄道しかありませんとある。ペルー、今はリマが首都だけど１５世紀のころはインカ帝国が栄え、そのころ首都はクスコだったらしい。そのクスコは標高３０００ｍ、そこからマチュピチュへは約１０００ｍの高低差を降りていくらしい。川に沿って鉄道が走っているという。ラパス国際空港は４１００ｍアンデス山脈（３９００ｍ、（富士山は３７７６ｍ））を鉄道が走っている。空気が薄くエンジンの動きが悪くなるので酸素濃度を高めるための日本製の機関車が走っているという。ペルー鉄道のラキーマが４８１８ｍで最高地点だったのですが、２００６年に中国チベット鉄道に５０７２ｍという最高地点ができたとか驚くことの多い本でした。

Gullet cancer 'might be blocked'
Scientists believe blocking the action of vitamin A may help prevent a type of cancer of the gullet. There has been an eight-fold rise in cases of oesophageal adenocarcinoma in the UK in the last 30 years. Researchers found exposure to vitamin A prompted changes in the cells that line the gullet which can ultimately lead to the cancer. The study, by the Medical Research Council Cell Unit, is published in the journal Gut. (BBC News)*****prevent（防ぐ）gullet（食道、のど）oesophageal（食道）adenocarcinoma（腺癌）prompt（刺激する）ultimately（最後に）＊＊＊＊＊数日前、KathyからI had a great trip to Thailand but am now home recooperating from a head cold.というメールが届きました。え？？鼻かぜとまた共同生活しているというような意味？面白い表現ですね。Recooperatingで何かイデイオムがあるのかな？きょうは「幸せを呼ぶパソコン風水」という本を読むと運を呼ぶためにはパソコンの周りを綺麗にし、東側に置いた方が良いとあります。デスクトップの画面は南の運気ニューヨークの高層ビルの壁紙などは仕事運を呼ぶとか。署名は末広がりにし/（スラッシュ）は縁を切るので使わない方がいいそうです。☆★がいいとか。デスクトップに置くアイコンは２４個までとゴミ箱はいつも空にするとあったので早速綺麗にして塩を置き、２５あったアイコンを一つ減らしゴミ箱も空にしました。きょうからこのブログも３年目に突入。２年間ありがとうございました。

Anti-cancer chicken eggs produced
UK scientists have developed genetically modified chickens capable of laying eggs containing proteins needed to make cancer-fighting drugs. The breakthrough has been announced by the same research centre that created the cloned sheep, Dolly. The Roslin Institute, near Edinburgh, says it has produced five generations of birds that can produce useful levels of life-saving proteins in egg whites. The work could lead to a range of drugs that are cheaper and easier to make. (BBC News)*****modify（少し変える）＊＊＊＊＊「深代惇郎エッセイ集」を１００円で手に入れたので読むととても興味深いことがいっぱいです。今から３０年ほど前に亡くなられているのですが３０年前のイギリス人のことなどをよく観察されて書かれています。でも今もそれほど変わっていないのではと思います。深代氏は１９７１年ころ朝日新聞ヨーロッパ総局長だったからかこれを読むとヨーロッパ事情などもよくわかります。またそのころエリザベス女王の夫君のフィリップ殿下にもインタビューされました。その前に、ラジオ体操でやる首回しを２,３回して「ユアーロイヤルハイネス」の練習もされたらしい。今もそのようなことをして会わないといけないのでしょうか。横メシ、縦メシといって横メシは外人と外国語をしゃべりながら会食、縦メシは日本人同士の会食らしい。イギリスの政治家は簡素な生活をしているとのこと。そういえば以前イギリスのALTに聞いたけどブレア首相の給料もそれほど高くないらしいですね。また、日本とイギリスが大陸を占領した時に奪ったものの違いがおもしろく表現されています。

Coffee may help relieve gym pain
Drinking coffee could help reduce the post-workout pain that puts many people off exercise, a small study suggests. The study found moderate doses of caffeine, roughly equivalent to two cups of coffee, can cut muscle pain by up to 48%. But researchers at the University of Georgia warned their findings may not be applicable to regular caffeine users who are less sensitive to its effects. The report was published in The Journal of Pain. (BBC News)*****roughly（おおよそ）equivalent（同等の）applicable（適用できる）＊＊＊＊＊「インド人はなぜゼロを見つけられたのか」門倉貴史著（４７６円）を東京駅の前の丸善で買っていたので読みました。インドは働かなくても周囲から責められない文化があったらしい。「考えることはすばらしい」と食べ物を分け与えてくれる大らかなインド人にあったからという。そのような考える人たちがゆっくりとゼロを考え出したのでしょうか。インドは勤労層が多くいる上に人口ピラミッドも土台がしっかりとしている。日本の９倍もある国土を持ち２０１０年以降、中国経済に追いつくらしい。日本はインドに円資金を一番多く貸しているのでちょっと期待したくなります。インド英語は聞きづらいと世界的に悪評高い。彼らはそんなことはお構いなく話している。TOEFLの成績はアジア２位、綺麗な英語ではなくてもどんどん使いながら覚えていくという方法で英語をマスターしているらしい。また、G７から今からはBRICsなどの国が成長を続けていること。バクシーンと道端で声をかけられるとどうなるか、ダウリーハラスメントなど興味あるお話がいっぱいです。

Probe studies 'extreme physics'
A pioneering US space agency spacecraft is set to launch on a mission to explore the most energetic phenomena in the Universe. The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (Glast) has been described as an "extreme physics" laboratory. The probe is due to launch from Florida's Cape Canaveral base in November on a Boeing Delta II rocket. As its name suggests, Glast will detect the emissions of gamma rays in space. Gamma rays are the most energetic form of radiation known to science. Examples of energetic phenomena to be probed by Glast include active galaxies, which spew massive amounts of energy from their centres. (BBC News)*****probe（探測装置、厳密に調べる）spew（噴出する）＊＊＊＊＊７日はすっかり晴れたので日本三公園のひとつ偕楽園へ連れて行ってくださいました。入場料が１９０円だったのに好文帝（http://www.kairakuen.u-888.com/kobuntei/index.html）に入ると沢山の部屋にその襖絵と共に名前が付けられています。上品な絵が素敵です。とその奥では「抹茶とお菓子をどうぞ」と無料で迎えてくださいます。でも時間がなかったので、遠慮したのですが入場料１９０円の安さでこのようなもてなしにうれしくなりました。またこの偕楽園公園は３００ヘクタールというニューヨークのセントラルパークに次ぐ世界第２位の広さだそうです。千波湖、徳川博物館の辺りもその公園に含まれているのですね。７日は突風が吹くので常磐線の遅れが目立ち予定より早めに東京へ向いました。そして浜松町の世界貿易センターからの東京の素敵な眺めを見て家路につきました。

Insulin pill is 'on the horizon'
An insulin pill made from a chemical found in shrimp shells is being developed by Taiwanese scientists. Researchers are looking for alternatives to the daily injections faced by people with diabetes. The team from the National Tsing Hua University has found a "nanoparticle" shell that can protect the drug from being destroyed by stomach acid. However, the doses currently needed to work in rat experiments far exceed those normally given to diabetics. Insulin is needed by the body to stop the levels of sugar in the bloodstream getting too high. Diabetics cannot produce enough of this body chemical, and need to get more into their bloodstream. (BBC News)*****on the horizon（明らかになりつつある）alternative（代案、他に採りうる道）＊＊＊＊＊次に雨の中、水戸から北２０Km,常陸太田にある西山荘（水戸黄門が１６９１年から１７００年７３歳でなくなられるまで、ここで過ごされました）へ行きました。この敷地内に薬草を植え、また３９７種類の薬草を載せた「救民妙薬集」を発行されているし、大日本史は１６５７年から編纂されているなど水戸黄門のことを再認識できました。次に夜暗くなっていたのですが福島県に近い所に位置する日本三名滝の一つ袋田の滝へ、ちょっと階段を上がりトンネルを抜けると雨のせいかその大きな滝の音に感動しました。翌朝また行くと４度の滝と呼ばれるように、それは４つの滝を美しく見せていました。それから竜神大橋に行きました。高所恐怖症の私は観るだけにするつもりが幅広い吊り橋だったので安心して渡れました。

How spicy foods can kill cancers
Scientists have discovered the key to the ability of spicy foods to kill cancer cells. They found capsaicin, an ingredient of jalapeno peppers, triggers cancer cell death by attacking mitochondria - the cells' energy-generating boiler rooms. The research raises the possibility that other cancer drugs could be developed to target mitochondria. The Nottingham University study features in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications. (BBC News)Nottinghamと言えば先日HelenがNottingham laceを送ってくれました。*****capsaicin（唐辛子の果実の辛味成分）japapeno（濃緑色の極辛の唐辛子）＊＊＊＊＊品川プリンスホテルから見える東京タワーもなかなかいいですね。夕食を一番上で食べようと思ったら６０００円とか５０００円です。止めて一番下のフードコートにしました。節約したので水族館へイルカやアシカ、ペンギンさんを見に行く事ができました。翌日は水戸で昼過ぎに待ち合わせだったので２時間ほどの間に上野の国立科学博物館へ行って見ました。とても綺麗に展示してあり、もっと時間があればゆっくり見たい気分でした。専門家による説明や講義などがあるようですね。水戸に着くと千波湖にある水戸黄門の銅像を見て徳川博物館へ連れて行かれました。水戸黄門の爪が長いのにはびっくりしました。昔の高貴な人は爪を伸ばされていたようですね。

Hormone balance clue to bulimia
The binge-eating disorder bulimia may, in some cases, be linked to a sex hormone imbalance, research suggests. Bulimia is normally viewed as a mental condition and treated with psychological therapies. However, Dr Sabine Naessén, from the Karolinska Institutet suggests some women with the condition may have too much of the male hormone testosterone. Half the bulimics treated for this imbalance reported less hunger, and fewer cravings for fatty, sugary food.(BBC News)*****binge（好きなだけ、思い切り）bulimia（過食症）hunger（飢え）craving（渇望）＊＊＊＊＊千と千尋の神隠しの舞台モチーフになったと言われる目黒雅叙園へ行きました。その日は竜宮城と言われるあの派手な百段階段を登っていく部屋は見ることはできなかったです。あれは３月と４月の１週間くらい見ることができますね。数年前ラッキーにも見ることができました。その豪華な派手さは桃山風、日光東照宮、歌舞伎など江戸の文化の流れであると言われているそうです。目黒から東京駅へ行き、丸の内オアゾに地下から入りました。おいしそうなお店がありますが、丸善の本屋さんは各階にテーブルと椅子があってサービスいいですね。そのあと皇居をうろうろしていると「東京タワーへはどう行ったらいいですか？」と日本語を話せる２４歳の台湾の人が話しかけてきました。大学で４年間日本語を勉強されただけでとてもお上手に日本語を理解し、話されることにびっくりしました。

'No proof' organic food is better
There is no evidence organic food is better for you than conventional food, minister David Miliband has said. The environment secretary said organic food was more of a "lifestyle choice that people can make". There is no "conclusive evidence either way" concerning the health effects of pesticides, he told the Sunday Times. The Soil Association, which regulates organic food, said studies show a difference between organic food and food produced using industrial methods. (BBC News)*****今年も早１週間が過ぎました。１,２,３日と外出、５,６,７日は東京、茨城を訪問しました。５日東京に着き、すぐ目黒の庭園美術館へ行き、バラの花を見つけてそのあとお隣の自然教育園へ入りました。広い森林の中を歩き始めるとすぐ70位の女性の方が「きょう雪割一華が咲いたから奥のほうだから見てきなさい」と教えてくださいましたhttp://www.hana300.com/yukiic.html 雪割一華という花を見るのも聞くのもはじめてだったので、奥へ奥へと向かいました。やっと皆が集まって写真を撮っていました。「これが雪割一華ですか？きょう咲いたらしいですね」と声をかけると「この花は夜閉じ朝開くからいつ咲き始めたかはわからないわ」とメモをしながら観察されていました。帰ろうとすると池の辺りに美しい人が一人で寂しげにされていたので「雪割一華見られましたか？」と声をかけると「いいえ、知らなかったわ。見に行って見る」と嬉しそうに奥の方へと走って行かれたのでこの雪割一華の花で皆が幸せをもらったようでした。

Would you eat cloned meat?
Should food from cloned animals be allowed onto supermarket shelves?Authorities in the United States have taken a major step towards allowing meat from cloned animals to be sold to the public.The Food and Drug Administration has decided in a draft ruling that milk and meat from cloned pigs, cattle and goats are safe to consume.(BBC News)＊＊＊＊＊京都３日目は友人と１０時３０分に待ち合わせだったので８時に京都駅で地下鉄１日乗車券を買って２時間３０分の待ち時間に醍醐寺まで出かけました。醍醐寺の五重塔と三宝院を見るのに１０００円払いました。急いで見たので１０：３１に友人と駅で再会できました。そのあと錦市場、祇園、先斗町などを散策して錦市場では白みそのお雑煮を頂きました。翌日はJRで伏見稲荷大社まで行きました。千本鳥居などを一人で歩いていると怖くなり帰ろうと思ったのですが四つ辻まで行きました。清少納言は枕草子の中で長く苦しい石段だと記しているらしいですね。その苦しい石段で毎日運動されている人達を見ました。このあと東福寺まで歩きました。廊下のような所からの眺めもいいですね。JRで京都駅まで行き、バスで下鴨神社と上賀茂神社にも行ったというhectic tripでした。上賀茂神社は川の流れが風流で心を洗われるような美しさを覚えました。あけましておめでとうございます。今年もよろしくお願い致します。（このお正月外出が多いのでブログに時間が取れません。申し訳ございません。しばらくしてからお返事します。）
