Nourish the Children Destination Report - October (Aug. & Sept. Donations)

Haiti (Donations made from 8/01-9/27)
For decades， Haiti has been plagued with poverty， corruption and a decaying infrastructure. It is estimated that 80 percent of the population lives in abject poverty. Life expectancy is less than 50 years， and 45 percent of the Haitian population is illiterate. Unemployment is near 70 percent.

数十年間の間、ハイチは、欠乏、腐敗および腐食するインフラストラクチュアで悩まされています。人口の80パーセントが極貧状態で生活していると推測されます。平均寿命は50年未満です。また、ハイチの人口の45パーセントは学問を学んではおりません。失業率は約70パーセントです。

In Haiti， malnutrition is a leading cause of death among children under 4. Haiti’s children represent 70 percent of the six million people on this impoverished island， and most of them endure illiteracy and hunger.

For a child suffering from hunger， finding enough food is more important than going to school. This is a primary reason why 130 million of the world’s 300 million hungry children do not attend school at all. Even if a child with an empty stomach does go to school， they become easily distracted and have problems concentrating on their lessons. Hunger disrupts a child’s ability to learn and achieve mentally as well as physically. But when free food is available at school， attendance rates soar and nourished children gain the ability to learn.

This month， Nourish the Children™ has teamed up with the UN World Food Programme to feed hungry Haitian children at school through the WFP Global School Feeding Campaign. A total of 234，150 of your donated meals were shipped to Haiti to feed children who wouldn’t normally get a hot meal while attending school. Guatemala (Donations made on 9/28-29)
Guatemala is the northernmost country in Central America. It is known for its breathtaking scenery of mountains and lakes， as well as its rich history from the Ancient Mayas to the Spanish colonial era. In Guatemala， 50 percent of the workforce engage in some form of agriculture， and problems continue to hinder its economic growth such as illiteracy， low levels of education， and drought. As a result， more than half of the population lives in poverty， and two-thirds of that number live in extreme poverty. Infant mortality and illiteracy rates in Guatemala are among the worst in the hemisphere.

Because of last year’s devastating drought that laid waste to subsistence crops in Guatemala， approximately 73，000 Guatemalan children are suffering from life-threatening malnutrition and about 5，000 are at risk of dying in the coming months.

グアテマラで作物を荒廃させた、昨年の壊滅的な干ばつのために、およそ73，000人のグアテマラの子供が生命に危険のある栄養失調に苦しんでおり、5，000人が今後数か月に死ぬ危険にさらされています。

Because of your help， these children will receive nutritious meals as Nourish the Children™ sends 36，000 of your donated meals to Guatemala. Our friends at Feed The Children™ will deliver these meals to Guatemalan children that now suffer from hunger and chronic malnutrition. Kenya (Donations made on 9/30)
Children in Kenya are no strangers to hardship， having to endure food shortages， poor health， severe poverty， and a lack of educational and medical services. In addition， the AIDS crisis has made their plight worse. AIDS kills about 6，000 people every day in Africa， making orphans of 15% of the children.

ケニアの子供たちは苦しみを知らない人々はいません、皆食糧不足、不健康、厳しい欠乏、および教育・医療サービスの不足に耐えています。さらに、AIDS危機はそれらの苦境をより悪化しました。AIDSは子供の15%の孤児を襲い、毎日アフリカで約6，000人を殺します。

Feed The Children™ is offering hope for the future of many Kenyan children. In August 2001 they opened the first Abandoned Baby Center. This center provides care and nurture for young children who have been discarded and left to die. One of the goals of the center is to care for and rehabilitate abandoned children and place them among caring families.

Chihuahua， Mexico Update (Donations made from 6/01-6/14)

There are many children in Chihuahua who must take refuge in orphanages because of abuse or abandonment. There they can receive good nourishment and education.

Nourish the Children™， in cooperation with the Humanitarian Resource Center of North America， sent 18，300 of your already donated meals to the orphanages of Chihuahua， Mexico. Your donations are currently being distributed to the children in the Chihuahua orphanages and are making a difference in the lives of hundreds of Mexican children.
