通常confessやadmitより積極的で「自分が負うべき責任を認める」という意味合いの濃い言い方である。

父親が窓ガラスを割ったのかと責めると、ジミーはすぐさま白状した。
The suspect admits that he stole the money, but he refuses to own up to the murder.
容疑者は金を盗んだことは認めているが、殺人に関しては白状しようとはしない。
