Detroit's automakers are finding new uses for worn-out jeans, discarded plastic bottles and manufacturing rubbish -- they're recycling them for use in new vehicle parts.
At GM, materials engineers have turned recycled carpet into door handle brackets and stuffed shredded denim in linings and in crevices to dampen noise.

Finding ways to reduce waste is great.

I see the Free Food Distribution Programs“ His table ” vehicle picks up food from A&P every morning.
I am sure that one day passed the expiration date foods are still good to eat.
Most food is still edible after the expiration date but may not be very tasty.
Did you know that stores are not legally required to remove food once the expiration date has passed? They are strictly "advisory" in nature.


It seems the clothing donation boxes at shopping center’s parking lot are always full.
(It is strange that those boxes are belonging to NJ charity organization. Maybe people in NY are more generous than people in NJ?)
We donate our used clothing, shoes and household items to the local Goodwill.
Goodwill is a non-profit organization that provides job training, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have a disability, lack education or job experience, or face employment challenges.
Goodwill generates income from selling the clothing and household goods donation.

As for the donation to NPO (nonprofit organization), there is no tax deduction for corporate or individual in Japan.
I think Japanese tax system has to be changed for revitalizing NPO activities.

   I'll eat anything I'm offered.!!!

アメリカの自動車メーカーは、使い古したジーンズ、放棄されたペットボトルや
製造屑の新しい用途を見つけて新車の部品にそれらをリサイクルしています。
GMでは、リサイクルされたカーペットをドアハンドルの取り付け金具に使い、
騒音を抑制するため裁断されたデニムを内張りなどに詰めていています。

日本の自動車会社もこれに負けずに再利用物質の活用をしているようですね。
トヨタとホンダは2015年目標のリサイクル実効率95％達成も視野と頑張っているようです。（ リンク ）

無駄や浪費を抑える事はいつの時代でも良い事ですが
特にこの不景気なご時世ではもっと実行するべきでしょう。

犬の散歩の折り返し点であるショッピングセンターで
毎朝“His table”という奉仕団体の車を見かけます。
スーパーマーケットで賞味期限が一日過ぎた食品を譲り受け
貧しい人たちへ配達しているようです。

賞味期限が切れた食品の殆どは食べても大丈夫なようです。
（味は落ちるようですが・・・）

アメリカでは賞味期限が切れた食品を
店の棚から下ろさなければならないと言う法律はないです。
賞味期限は厳密には助言、アドヴァイスに過ぎないのです。
ジョンは賞味期限を見ないで買い物をしますが私はしっかり確認しますよ。


ショッピングセンターの駐車場の隅に衣類寄付箱が設置されています。
いつも満杯なようです。
何故かこれらの寄付箱はニュージャージーの慈善団体の物です。
ニューヨークの住民の方がニュージャージー住民より寛大なのでしょうか？
我が家は衣類等は地元の Goodwill（グッドウィル） に寄付しています。

グッドウィルは職業訓練、職業紹介サービス、
および他の地域密着型のプログラムを障害者や
教育又は職務経験が欠如している人々に提供するです。
主な収入は服、靴、家具などの寄付品を2000以上の店舗で
中古品販売をして得ています。
(2008年度の小売売上は２１．６億ドルです。凄いですね。 リンク )

アメリカでは非営利団体に対する寄付は
企業でも個人でも一定の限度内で所得控除対象になります。
税金を払うかわりに自分の応援する団体に寄付しようということになります。
ジョンの以前の会社では給料から直接、非営利団体へ天引き寄付していました。

日本では税金控除対象にならないらしいですね？
日本のNPOの活性化には税法を改正する必要がありますね。
