Euro 2004

A man had great tickets for the Euro 2004 final.
As he sits down, another man comes over and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.
"No," he says. "The seat is empty."

"This is incredible!" said the man.
"Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Euro 2004 Final, the biggest sporting event in the world and not use it?"
He says, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me.
My wife was supposed to come with me, but she passed away.
This is the first Final we haven't been to together since we got married."

"Oh ... I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible.
But couldn't you find someone else - a friend or relative, or even a neighbour to take the seat?"
The man shakes his head. "No they're all at the funeral."

その男は、ユーロ２００４決勝戦の、とても良い席のチケットを持っていた。
彼が席に着くと他の男がやってきて、隣の席に誰か座る人がいるのかと尋ねた。
「いいえ」　彼は答えた。
「この席は空席なのです」

「信じられない！」　男は言った。
「世界で最も大きなスポーツイベントの、こんな良い席を無駄するなんて、正気の沙汰じゃない！」彼は言った。
「いや、実はこの席は私のものなのです。妻が一緒に来る予定だったのですが、他界しましてね。今日は、結婚して以来、初めての二人揃って観られない決勝なのです」

「それは・・・御愁傷様です。大変でしたね。でも、誰か代わりの人をー、友達とか親戚とか、近所の人を誘う事が出来たでしょうに」
彼は首を振った。
「いや、みんな全員、葬式に行っていてね」
