At と On と In

事ができる事は既に説明した。ただし、その３つの単語はその守備範囲が
異なる。イメージできて欲しいのはその位置・範囲感覚である。

　まずは場所を表す場合で説明する。
　at はある１地点または比較的狭い場所をピンポイントで指定する。

wait at the exit[door] 出口で[戸口]で待つ at home 家で
At a person’s side[back， heels] 人のわき[背後、すぐ後ろ]で

　それに対し、in は比較的広い範囲をカバーする。

in the yard 庭で　in the suburbs 郊外に in the east 東部に
in London ロンドンで　in Japan 日本で　in the world 世界で　

　on は何かに面している場所を特定する。

A house on the beach 浜辺沿いの家
A gas station on the highway 高速道路ぎわのガソリンスタンド

つまり、ホテルの住所を言う場合など、どのレベルまで特定できている
かで出だしの単語が変わるのである。

The hotel is ’in’ New York city.
The hotel is ’on’ Columbus Ave in New York city.
The hotel is ’at’ 1234 Columbus Avenue in New York city.

　時（刻）や期間を表す場合でも同様の感覚で説明できる。
　まず最も狭い範囲に限定されるのが at である。この単語は１点感覚をもち、
　時刻レベルでピンポイントで指定される。

at [noon， dawn， dusk， sunrise， sunset] 正午[夜明け、夕暮れ、日の出、日没]に
School begins at nine　授業は９時から始まる。（～からは from とは限らない。）
The thermometer stands at zero 温度計は0度を示している。

　次に月・季節・年など比較的長い時間や期間を示す時には、in が使われる。

In the afternoon 午後に　in January １月に　in spring 春に
in 2004　2004年に　in the 21st century 21世紀に

　そして、on は特定の日や時間を表す。（＊この指定が最も強い。）

on Friday[s] [毎週]金曜日に on February 17th　２月１７日に
On New Year’s Day お正月に　on my birthday　私の誕生日に

　　♪さらに突っ込み（加えて以下のルールがある）♪

　＊morning， afternoon， evening， night など本来はin や at を使うべき場合も、
　特定する修飾語が付いている時には、in や at でなく、on を使う。

on Monday morning　月曜日の朝 on a cold[clear] night 寒い[澄んだ]夜[空]に

early， middle， late などの場合には、 in の守備範囲のままである。

in the early morning 午前中早くに in the late evening 夜遅くに
