「Rock Of Faith」（以下RoF）、ジョン・ウェットンの長いキャリアの中でも最高傑作であると私は確信する。

ジョン自身がブックレットで解説しているように楽曲の一つ一つに「愛、不確実性、絶望、渇望、モラル、怒り、希望、死、容認」というテーマが凝縮されている。

このアルバムでジョンは、「ゴスペル・ロック」とでもいうべき新たなジャンルを確立した、と言ったら言い過ぎであろうか。じっさい、ゴスペル・ロックというジャンルは存在する。１９７２年、ジョンがベーシストとしてスタジオ録音に協力したLarry Normanというアメリカのミュージシャンがまさにゴスペル・ロック歌手であった。

ただしRoFの特徴は、神（God）、イエス（Jesus）などという宗教用語が一切、出てこないという点で、歌の中で自らのキリスト信仰を告白していKen Hensley(ex.Uriah Heep)やLarry Normanとは異なる。RoFは「宗教くささのない、実に霊的な作品」に仕上がっているのである。

John Lennonの「Mother」を思わせる教会の鐘の響き（こちらは８回も鳴る）で幕を開け、フロイドの「Shine On Your Crazy Diamond」を思わせるJohn Mitchellのデイヴ・ギルモア風泣きのギターが炸裂する「Mondrago」。

間髪入れずに続く、表題曲の「Rock Of Faith」。いきなりジョン自身の「神体験」が語られる。絶望の淵に追い込まれた人間が、なにも恐れることのない「岩のように固い信念（rock of faith）」を抱くにいたる男の物語の始まりだ。

「A New Day」は「贖罪」がテーマとなっている。サビの所がムーディー・ブルースの「サテンの夜」に似ている（パクリ？）という主張は枝葉末節にすぎない。ジョンの意図を正しく伝えていないブックレットの翻訳は少々問題だが、原詩を素直に辿れば、ポジティブなエンディングに希望を感じることができるだろう。

久々のWetton-Downes作、「I’ve Come To Take You Home」はジョン自身が名付け親になったGeoffの娘、Christinaについてジョンが相談を受ける中で出来上がった作品だとのこと。娘を思う父親の気持ち、心遣いが感じられる優しいバラード。お涙頂戴ソングの極致。メロディ的には「偽りの微笑み」の続編と考えてみても面白そう。

「Who Will Light A Candle?」は「死」をストレートにイメージしたRichard Palmer-Jamesの研ぎ澄まされた詩が怖いくらいに迫ってくる。Burrn!誌３月号に掲載されたジョンのインタビューで、タロットカードでは、死は再生を意味すると言うことが語られている。死をも再生のための宿命として受け止めようと言うポジティブな思考の現われとも言えるのかもしれない。

「Nothin’s Gonna Stand in Our Way」は、マスコミに追い回されながら逃避行を続ける男女の姿を描いたものか？Susan Shifrinとの共作となると「I’ll Never Stop Loving You」とか「Prayin’ 4 A Miracle」のように激情型の曲が多いのであるが、この曲も、許されぬ愛に堕ちる男女が描かれているという点で、意味深な？曲。パパラッチに追い掛け回され、恋人と非業の死をとげたダイアナ妃のことを思い出してしまった。

さてここからB面ともいえるインスト曲の「Altro Mondo」は、ダウン症に冒された子供達のために作られたチャリティアルバム「The Sky Goes All The Way Home」（９９年）にジョンが提供した「Adagietto」が元曲。よりダイナミックにアレンジされていて、このアルバムの神聖な雰囲気を盛り上げている。

続いて奏でられる「I Believe in You」がこのアルバムでジョンが一番伝えたいメッセージであると思われる。ダイナミックな歌詞が究極のラブソングたらしめている。「Woman」「Am I in Love?」と共に、ウェットン三大ラブ・ソングと呼ぶことにした(笑)。中間部のアレンジ（サックス、フルート、オーケストレーション）もぞくぞくするほどすばらしい。

「Take Me Down to the Waterline?」はセックス・ソングであるとのこと。９月の来日公演でもその辺を説明していた。個人的には真実の愛、新しい生命の息吹のようなものがテーマになっている佳曲ではないかと思う。愛する気持ちはたくさんあるけれども時間が無い、という表現にジョンの今の切実な気持ちが現れているよう。ジョン･ヤングとの共作で、来日公演ではウケもよかったように思えた。

「I Lay Down」は、往年の産業ロックバンド（Queen，Journeyなど）の名プロデューサー、Mike Stoneへの鎮魂歌。Arkangel収録の「After All」と同路線であるが、こちらのほうがもっと哀愁をそそる内容。「横たわって目を閉じる、君の名を呼び、なすがままにと囁く。すると君が横にいるかのような気分になる。」という歌詞には泣ける。

「When You Were Young」は愛息Dylan君を念頭に置き、未来を担う子供たちへのメッセージ。父親として子を思う気持ちがストレートにでている。同時にこれはファンへのメッセージでもある。アカペラのアレンジが神聖で宗教的な雰囲気をさらに高めたところでジ・エンド。

国内盤（MICP-10347）にはボーナストラックとして「Cold Comfort」と「God Only Knows」が収録されている。前者は「Mondrago」の歌詞付きヴァージョンという感じ。コーラス部のメロディ、コード進行が同一である。後者は言わずと知れたビーチ・ボーイズのカバー曲。ジョンはこの曲を初めて聞いたとき、世界が変わったかのような衝撃を受けたそうだ。以降、彼の作曲手法に大きな影響を与えたのである。

I was talking to RP-J about Vienna,where he had spent his 50th birthday,and he recommended that I do also--in the same hotel where he had been. It sounded like a good idea,so while Dylan was with his grandparents,off we drove to the Austrian capital.While we were there,a music festival was in progress,and on every Viennese street were musical acts of various types,from jazz to gypsy-- very bizarre musical events aplenty. One particular band that stuck in my mind was an eastern European fiddle,acoustic upright bass,and a dulcimer/zither. The music was so ethereal, Romany and just plain atmospheric. the chord changes and scales of eastern music evoke a strange ambience. Added to the fact that this takes place in Vienna,the most eastern city in western Europe,the whole effect was tres bombastique.The melody and chords wrote themselves in my mind that very afternoon,but I was stuck with the lyric,so when I approached Richard Palmer-James to help,he already understood exactly what I was trying to create,because he had been in the same place two years previously (his birthday is the day before mine).His original title was 'Messengers',but I preferred the 'Who will Light a Candle?" line. Of course,the subject matter is death--our mutual half-centuries reminding us both of our mortality.Richard wrote the verses,and the bridge ('For me now,there's no love left inside of me...')is mine .'Rock of Faith' deals with the whole picture of my existence. Truth (Mondrago),rebirth, baptism& procreation(Waterline),childhood/fatherhood (When You Were Young),love (I Believe in You),faith (title track), hope(Nothing's gonna stand in our Way),death (Who Will Light a Candle),and afterlife (Altro Mondo)even masturbation,or actually auto eroticism (I Lay Down,which unlike the frantic I'm Turning Japanese, deals with the subject {I hope} in a sensual,intimate honest,and shameless way), betrayal (Cold Comfort),and 'falling in love again'(I've come to take You Home). With 'God Only Knows" ,the live in Argentina version is a tribute to the song that kicked off my whole musical adventure. So, if you include 'New Day' (which was precocious by 3 years,as it was about sobriety--2002 was my first real attempt at recovery {I was sober when I recorded RoF},but there were things that I still thought I could hang on to). I hope that gives you a little more understanding about what went into 'RoF'.
