どうしてウェットンの過去曲は「宮殿」なのか？

メンバーの過去曲が１曲ずつ演奏されました。

スティーヴ･ハウはイエスの「ラウンド・アバウト」、
カール・パーマーはＥＬＰの「庶民のファンファーレ」、
ジェフ・ダウンズはバグルズの「ラジオスターの悲劇」と、
それぞれ納得できる選曲でしたが…、
なぜかジョン・ウェットンが選んだのが
初期キング・クリムゾンの名曲「クリムゾン・キングの宮殿」。

ウェットンはこの期には参加していないし、
もちろん作曲者としてクレジットもされていない。
どうせやるなら「レッド」か「スターレス」、
百歩譲って「ワン・ウェイ・オア・アナザー」でしょうなどと
考えてもみましたが…。

そこには深いわけがあったようです。

I do not feel I have to justify the democratic decision to perform 'In the Court of the Crimson King' on the current ASIA tour,but here is my take on it for my people,on my website:

I am aware of the cons of ITCOTKC,but the pros outweigh.
My criterion (because the band wanted to nail the song) was simply that we perform it well, and I would have not attempt it if we could not pull it off.

To my knowledge,none of ELP was in the original Aaron Copland band.
I have known both original composers of 'ITCOTCK ' for over 35 years,and have written with both of them - I doubt that either Ian or Pete have a problem with me singing it.
（ＥＬＰのメンバーだってファンファーレの作曲者と演奏したことがある者はいない。
私は35年間に渡り宮殿の作曲者であるイアン・マクドナルドとピート・シンフィールドをよく知っているし、両者と曲を書いたこともある。）

If Bob Dylan performed it as emotively as we did,people would be praising that,not squabbling about whether he had actually been in the original band at the time of its inception.
（もしボブ・ディランがこの曲を演奏したとしたら、賛美の声が上がるだろう。
彼がクリムゾンに在籍していなかったら歌う資格がないなど非難する声は出ないだろう。）

King Crimson does not perform this song live, but should they request that I stop,I will. It is not meant as a parody, but a tribute,to a magnificent band of whose own history I was a part.
（クリムゾンはこの曲をライブ演奏しないので私に歌うなと要求しても、私は歌う。
これはパロディではなく歴史のある巨大なバンドの一員だった者としてのトリビュートだからだ。）

I feel it would be a shame to substitute another Crimson song at this time,for 'In the Court'(e.g 'Starless'),as a lot of people enjoy the performance of this revered,and gorgeous piece of history.
（私はクリムゾンの他の曲、たとえばスターレスなどに代えることは残念なことだと思う。
なぜなら多くの人が豪華で尊敬に値する歴史の断片が演奏されることを楽しんでいるから。）

Many music historians hold it responsible for the creation of progressive rock,but for me it remains a beautifully expressive,atmospheric Zeitgeist, I love singing it,and I adore being there when people realize the vision of McDonald/Sinfield, the consummate brilliance of Robert Fripp,Michael Giles and Greg Lake,and what a great band it was.
（多くの歴史を築いてきたミュージシャンたちはプログレの創造に責任を担ってきたが、私にとってはそれは美しい表現方法であり時代精神の現れであったと思うので、ただ歌うことが好きだし、マクドナルド・シンフィールドの描いたヴィジョンやロバート・フリップ、マイケル・ジャイルス、グレッグ・レイクらの素晴らしい才能を人々に知ってもらうことが大切だと思っている。）

That history I am proud to be a part of , and if I am an instrument in its further perpetuation, then Amen.

ウェットンらしい実に謙虚なコメントだと思います。
