Edmonton

This is a great view from Saskachewan Drive of the city skyline. You can see the North Saskachewan River at the bottom, the Walterdale Bridge (green bridge) and the Alberta Parlaimentary Building where the province's goverment is. It is an even better view at night when the lights are all lit up, I'll get a picture of that one day.

This was taken March 2005. We had 3 days in a row of 10 degrees C which is pretty rare for the beginning of March. The river is starting to melt on one side, but the rest is still under a pretty thick layer of ice. The blue bridge is for pedestrians on the bottom and the LRT (Edmonton's sort-of subway system). The taller bridge in the back is the High Level Bridge. It was built in 1913 and has a railroad on the top which is no longer in use, along with the normal level for car traffic. It was the first bridge in Canada to carry 4 types of transportation - railroad, streetcar, auto, and pedestrian.

Here is the legislative building. This is where the government of Alberta does it's job, whatever that is. It's a pretty nice building inside and out, lots of neat stuff inside, I would recommend taking the half hour free tour they give. Just walk inside and tell the guard at the door you would like a tour and someone will come by for you.
The grounds around the building are just as nice. Of course, it's a bit better in the summer as all the fountains are turned off in the winter. It is a very nice place to spend an afternoon just walking around, or you can just chill out on some of the wide areas of grass and bask in the sun (when it's actually out).

On this day you can see the Canadian flag at half mast. A few days before this picture was taken, 4 RCMP officers were killed about 150km northwest of Edmonton. All Canadian and Albertan flags on the grounds were this way.

This is inside the legislative building. This is Queen Elizabeth II's signature from when she visited Edmonton in 1985.

This is the eternal flame on the legislative grounds.
