Police believe he made a total of 100 fake notes and used them at soft
drink and cigarette vending machines , receiving some 20,000 yen in change. Questioned by police, the boy said he came to know how to make counterfeit notes through an article in a magazine he bought at an Internet auction site.
"I wanted to make money," officers quoted the boy as saying. He gave the fake notes to his classmates at school, and a mother of one of the friends reported him to officials of the school.
Police reported five of the boy's friends to a local child consultation center for helping him forge the notes.

取調べに対し、少年は、インターネットのオークションサイトで購入したある雑誌の記事を参考に、偽造紙幣の作り方を知るようになったと答えた。警察によると、少年は｢お金を作ってみたかった」ということだ。少年は偽札を級友たちに渡し、ある級友の母親が学校職員に少年のことを報告した。少年の紙幣偽造を手伝ったかどで、警察は友人５人を都内の児童相談所に届け出た。(2004年12月1日 毎日新聞）
