Moving fast and breaking things is not a novel concept. Companies and developers feel the (self-inflicted) pressure of accelerating the rate of delivery of new products and features.
素早く行動、現状打破は、目新しい概念ではありません。企業や開発者は、新製品や新機能の提供速度を加速させるという(自ら招いた)プレッシャーを感じます。

Recently, this was brought up again in a memo that alluded to the Red Queen’s race. If you are not familiar, it is “… it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”
最近、これは赤の女王のレースをほのめかすメモで再び取り上げられました。馴染みがない方のために説明すると、「... 全力で走り続けても、同じ場所に留まる。他の場所に行きたいなら、少なくともその2倍の速さで走る必要がある!」

Fueled by the AI “revolution”, this only adds more fuel to the fire: We are expected to move faster. In this case, how can you guarantee you are going in the right direction?

To me, now more than ever, having a technology radar is vital to help you stay on course — and adjust it when necessary.

The Unspoken Problem

If your development team is bigger than one person, you are bound to have faced this situation: a new developer joins — or a new team is formed — to help deliver a specific product or functionality.

The new dev decides to start using a new persistence technology, and because we have to move fast, development ensues and goes live. Now you find yourself using Postgres and MongoDB!

But you may ask, is that a problem that I use two/three/N different technologies? Aren’t we supposed to embrace a polyglot world, leveraging the best tool/framework/etc for the job at hand?

In the vacuum, the answer is “No, of course not!”. Au contraire, you should be open and not shy away from trying and adopting new tools, if they make sense for the task. But we do not live in a vacuum, do we?

The problem is that most companies are not Insert-Your-Big-Tech-Company-sized. This means that your reduced team now needs to support a myriad of technologies, and that happened without you realizing or preparing for that.
