My understanding of Bitcoin’s history, both from research and personal experience, closely mirrors how Roger Ver presents it in his book Hijacking Bitcoin.
私のビットコインの歴史に関する理解は、研究と個人的な経験の両方から得たもので、ロジャー・バーが彼の著書ビットコインの乗っ取りで説明している内容と非常に一致しています。

Still, while reading I came across many things I had never known before. Since I only began studying Bitcoin in March 2017, much of the earlier history was entirely new to me.

In the book, Roger clearly explains why Bitcoin was created, what problem it aimed to solve, why its price rose so quickly, and how it posed a serious challenge to the existing financial system.

Most importantly, he shows how the original vision of Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash was not lost, but preserved and carried forward through Bitcoin Cash.

By 2017, Bitcoin Had Already Become Toxic

I went there to trace the roots of Bitcoin and eagerly read Satoshi’s posts and the early community’s discussions.

The passion was real and overwhelming.

Looking back to the early days, I would describe the early Bitcoin community as a powerful force waiting to be unleashed.

It was a movement ready to challenge the corrupt financial system that caused the 2008 crisis and offer people economic freedom through a decentralized, digital money system.

Reading early forum posts was, for me, the best education on Bitcoin I could ever have.

People were excited whenever a new business accepted Bitcoin. Developers patiently answered questions, even from skeptics. The spirit was open, respectful, and full of purpose.

There was no toxicity.

But as I kept reading, I started seeing something completely different.

The newer posts became full of hostility. Aggressive arguments and flame wars were everywhere. It felt like a mob had taken over, silencing anyone who asked honest questions.

I experienced it firsthand.

As a beginner, I quickly realized that my questions about Bitcoin’s use for payments were often ignored or even mocked.

I had read the whitepaper, and coming from the banking and payments sector, I clearly understood the problems Satoshi was trying to solve. I also knew the banks would eventually push back, but what I didn’t expect was that they had already set changes in motion.

They gave their time freely to promote a tool that could replace fiat currencies and remove middlemen from transactions.

But by early 2017, even before the hard fork (August 2017), everything had changed.

The ecosystem was toxic, and many users seemed bitter, angry, or unwilling to help newcomers understand Bitcoin.

At the time, I didn’t connect the dots, but later it became clear that many of the toxic voices opposing Bitcoin’s use for payments were not random users.

It shows how development was hijacked, innovation stalled, and dissent silenced.
