Have you ever visited a fish market early in the morning? This is a fish market in Katuura. There are a number of places named Katuura in Japan. This paticure Katuura is in Chiba.
Fellow Toastmasters and welcome guests.
A friend of mine showed me this picture. I was very interested in this picture because I lived in a house near a fish market just like this one when I was a little girl. This picture remineded me of my childfood. I used to hear loud voices when the fish buyers and sellers were agreeing on prices. I and my friends went to the beach to collect shellfish and fish at a breakwater. It was so exciting for us to cook them on a hot iron plate. We made a secret place in a mountain where we could see a beautiful stream and play "house". We were very proud of having such place to play. As the town was small, we used to ride bikes around it. We sometimes went to the shrine on a small mountain. From the shrine ,we could see the blue sky and the sea. We painted some pictures in peace there. We could play freely outside after school.
Today children can have a cell phone with a camera and learn how to use a computer at school but they can't play freely out side after school. The problem is strangers who attack children suddenly without any reason. There are so many dangers around children. Schools aren't safe places for children any more. Parks are not safe ,either. Mothers take care of them very much saying "Don't do this .Don't do that." I understand their feeling very much.
This is a survey what children do after school.
girls no.1 watching TV 53% no.2 reading comic books and books 44% no.3 chatting 41% boys no.1 playing computer games 60% no.2 watching TV 47% no.3 reading comic books 41%
Almost children are at home after school. Is it good for them? I don't think so.
I read an article about chips which put children's school bags or tags in order to check when children come to school or leave school. Maybe it is a good idea to check children but I felt something strange when I read this article. Children are not books or clothes which are managed by shop owners. This article tells us how serious enviroment around children is .
We should do something for children even though our help isn't so great.
The best solution is changing our society by ourselves.
I heard a story about old people who say "Hi!!" and "Good bye!!"to children at the school gate as a volunteer activity. They also guard strangers around school.
I'd like to bring children to a fish market . I want them to know people who work very hard early in the morning.
What would you like to do for children?
Please ask yourself "What can I do for children now?"
