ぶらり東京散歩その34～府中郷土の森あじさい祭り Tokyo Stroll 34 Hydrangea Festival in Fuchu

When I visited my family grave at Tama Cemetery on Father’s Day, I discovered that Edogawa Rampo’s grave was located very close to ours. I had been coming there for decades and had never noticed.

さて、そこからクルマで20～30分弱、東京競馬場を横切り、到着したのが「府中共同の森博物館」。
Now then, after a 20 to 30 minutes’ drive , passing by Tokyo Racecourse, We arrived at the “Fuchu Kyodo-no-Mori Museum.”

あじさいまつりを開催しているというので、足を延ばしてみたのだが、この日は夕刻だというのにとにかく蒸し暑いのに閉口した。
I decided to go a bit out of my way since they were holding a hydrangea festival, but despite it being late in the afternoon, the stifling humidity was almost unbearable.

敷地は広大。The grounds are vast.

小川が流れているかと思えば、
One moment you’ll find a stream flowing through the area,

you’ll also come across old traditional houses and other historic buildings like these.

水場では子供たちが気持ちよさそうに遊んでいた。
Children were playing in the water, looked like having a great time.

肝心のあじさいはといえば、たしかに綺麗なのだが、いかんせん敷地が広大で、一カ所に密集しているとうわけでもないので、圧倒される感じではなかった。
As for the hydrangeas themselves, they were certainly beautiful, but since the grounds are so vast and the flowers weren’t densely clustered in one area, they didn’t quite have the overwhelming impact I had hoped for.

もっともゴージャスだったのがこちらの「アナベルの丘」。
The most stunning landscape was this “Hill of Annabelle.”

変わったアジサイだなと思ったら、アジサイとは少し異なる北アメリカ東部原産の園芸品種なのだそうだ。
First,I thought it was an unique type of hydrangea, and it turns out it’s actually a horticultural variety native to the eastern part of North America, somewhat different from typical hydrangeas.

園内にはプラネタリウムもあるそうだ。I heard there’s also a planetarium inside the park.

売店では鉱物とか化石とか、なかなかマニアックなものが売られている。

墓参りの帰りで夕刻だった、すでに夕刻だったことに加えて、とにかく蒸し暑くてあまり精力的に回れなかったが、気候がよければ、半日ぐらい過ごしてもよいと思った。すぐそばにはサントリーのビール工場もあるので、そちらと組み合わせるのも面白いかもしれない（見学は要予約）。
It was already late afternoon on the way back from visiting the graves, and on top of that, the stifling humidity made it hard to explore much. However, I think it would be nice to spend around half a day there if the weather were better. Since the Suntory beer factory is also nearby, combining a visit there might be an interesting option as well (advance reservation required for tours).
