Introducing
*EMMANUEL CARELLA*
part 2
Oh, the irony. Emmanuel Carella, one of the most talked-about new male vocal talents of 2003, has new single, titled “Don’t Say A Word”.
Yet, it is difficult to maintain a hush as Carella - whose debut single “2Beautiful” was a Top 40 hit for an impressive 12 weeks - ups the ante with a gritty vocal, revealing fresh range and depth.
“It’s a different side of me,” Carella says, “a side that shows a bit more edge, while retaining all the things I love in a song: meaning, emotion, feel …”
“Don’t Say A Word” was co-written and recorded in Los Angeles with proven hit maker, Pam Reswick (Tina Arena, Jo Dee Messina).
Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi) contributes a radio-ready rock mix of “Don’t Say A Word.”
Secret love and forbidden romance: “Don‘t Say A Word” is, thematically, a dark song about true feelings being hidden against a backdrop of fear and prejudice.
“I have watched friends who were too scared to reveal their love because of the consequences,” Carella says. “It’s sad. People should not be afraid to fall in love.”
His collaboration with Reswick, which netted five songs, including “2Beautiful,” taught Carella important lessons in songwriting and vocal delivery.
“Call it psychic, but Pam brought everything out of me. I’d always wanted to express myself that way, but didn’t know how. She understood wherever I came from,’’ Carella says.
2003 has been a stellar ride for Carella, the classic tale of a singer/somgwriter trapped inside a formally trained dancer’s body. After signing to Luxor Records, a label run by Michael Gudinski and Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum, Carella’s distinctive falsetto vocal on “2Beautiful” translated to an immediate top 30 hit, and sat in the ARIA singles chart for the best part of six months.
“It was bizarre to hear my song on the radio and see it in the charts. Surreal,” Carella says. “It really caught me by surprise. From dreaming about it as a kid, to seeing it become a reality.
“I would recommend this kind of thrill to anybody.”
But these are early days for Emmanuel Carella. He is 21-years-old. He is working on an album of songs co-written with writers as talented and diverse as Pam, Phil Buckle, Stefan Skarbek, Russell Morris and Mark Lizotte [Diesel].
He has only given a hint of his potential.
“I am enthusiastic because everybody around me is passionate about the music,’’ says Carella. “I believe that if you put your heart and soul into it, your dreams can come true. But you have to work hard.”
Carella smiles at the memory of his eagerness to work with Reswick after a 15-hour flight from Australia to the U.S.
“I left Melbourne on a Monday, got to LA on a Monday, and I went straight to Pam’s to start recording. I didn’t care if I was jetlagged. Why should I sit around sleeping? I was in LA working on my record!’’
That session resulted in a track with experimental vocal flow in the verses, a hooky chorus, and a now-rock production that lifts the game considerably.
It is titled “Don’t Say A Word” and it is released on Luxor Records, through Liberation Music, on August 25.
The accompanying video clip was shot by Cordelia Beresford and directed and edited by Jake Robb [Powderfinger, Pre-Shrunk and The Androids] and produced by Jasmin Tarasin McGee for Propeller Productions.
R ‘n’ B remixes have been commissioned from Travis King and Rudi with a Euro-remix already delivered by the Leigh Bros. These will be serviced to clubs as a limited edition vinyl release.
The single will contain a total of seven tracks, including 2 new re-mixes of Emmanuel’s first hit single ‘2beautiful’.
