Junta promises village rehabilitation program but fails to deliver

HURFOM:On April 24th, 2024, the Mon State military junta announced that displaced persons from Dhammasa, Than Ga Long, Kywe Gone and Ta Ra Nar villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State could return to their homes and begin a rehabilitation program.

The Mon State Chief Minister and its government officials promised 1.1 million MMK would be dispensed to support each displaced villager who lost their homes to fire.

However, according to a local source, no organization or individual has been provided any financial support.

“ We heard that 1.1 million MMK had been promised for those whose homes had been lost to fire. Also, other essential household items would be delivered. But as of today, nothing has reached us ,” said a Dhammasa villager.

The military junta is also attempting to open schools on June 1, 2024.

“ Most students in this area have to go to school in Ta Ra Nar village. The junta thinks opening schools can attract displaced persons to return home so they do that ,” said a Ta Ra Nar resident.

Alongside the junta’s propaganda effort to encourage displaced persons to return home, the military remain present in the area and have been arresting and killing villagers.
