May 22, 2024

On May 10th, 2024, six men from Chauk Mile Ward, Mawlamyine, Mon State were arrested by the military junta after being accused of providing support to the People’s Defense Force.

The junta claimed the six men bought machinery spare parts at the Mawlamyine Cement Factory near Kaw Don and Kaw Pa Naw villages, Kyikemayaw Township where the People Defense Forces are active and where they have an established base. All six men were arrested at their houses.

All of them are making a living from buying and selling old things. Now, they have been interrogated at the Myine Thar Yar Police Station ,” said a Mawlamyine resident.

Since early 2024, the military junta has frequently arrested Mawlamyine residents after accusing them of having connection with, or providing financial support to the PDF.

According to the Association for the Assistance to Political Prisoners (AAPP), more than 800 residents in Mon State have been arbitrarily arrested since military rule was enacted.  It is estimated this number is a conservative reflection of reality on the ground in communities.
