How the Reshape Tool works (including advanced features)
Hello!
Recently, there's been some talk in the “Rethinking the Scratch 2.0 Paint Editor” discussion about the Eraser Tool being removed from the vector editor. Instead of posting there I'm creating a new discussion because I'd also like to explain all of the features of the Reshape Tool.
The Eraser Tool was able to erase parts of shapes and lines, but you haven't lost that ability . When you use the Reshape Tool you can cut open a shape or remove a section of a line.
This is how the Reshape Tool works:
* Click on a line or border of a shape where there is no point to add a point.
- Holding down shift will add a line segment that is curved on a straight segment or one that is straight on a curved segment
* Drag a point to move it and the line that passes through it
- Moving an endpoint to the other end of the same unclosed shape will close the shape (now you can color the inside!)
- Moving an endpoint to an endpoint of another unclosed shape will connect them ( the new merged shape will have the same color and thickness of the shape you were editing )
* Clicking on an point, without moving it, will remove it.
- If you have the shift key down while doing this the shape will be cut (disconnected) where the point had been.
- Cutting open a closed shape will remove the fill color if it was filled.
* Press the delete key to remove the shape
* Pressing the zoom in button will zoom in on the shape you are editing. This can be good for making precise changes.
I'd be happy to answer any Reshape Tool (or general paint editor) questions, just reply! The ability to cut shapes was just added in the version we deployed today (version 248).
Thanks,
Shane

How the Reshape Tool works (including advanced features)
This changed literally during editing something :O it was quite scary x) but it's looking really good, having tried out a few of the features. The Scratch Team are so helpful and always updating things! Thanks so much!![](http://beta.scratch.mit.edu/scratchr2/static/djangobb_forum/img/smilies/big_smile.png)

If I didn't have this tool, I wouldn't be able to make anything
in the vector editor. Woo-hoo!

How the Reshape Tool works (including advanced features)
It's a major vector graphics feature, and I'm glad to know how it works.
I think we should have more control over ‘smoothing’ though, it can be annoying sometimes when you draw something detailed, and then let go of the mouse, and it all looks ‘rounded’. Just a suggestion!![](http://beta.scratch.mit.edu/scratchr2/static/djangobb_forum/img/smilies/smile.png)

Why can't it just be left as it is?
The rate you're going, you might as well just have one tool and have to press ridiculously complicated combinations of keys to do each thing with it. These changes aren't improvements.

That's really cool! Maybe vector editing isn't so awful…![](http://beta.scratch.mit.edu/scratchr2/static/djangobb_forum/img/smilies/wink.png)
My only complaint is that the “snap” area for merging shapes together by their endpoints is a tad small. Similarly for clicking on a line to add a point.
Thanks ST!![](http://beta.scratch.mit.edu/scratchr2/static/djangobb_forum/img/smilies/big_smile.png)

Bitmap editor makes it so i don't need to use the annoying vector one! (only use the vector for reshaping and resizing)

How the Reshape Tool works (including advanced features)
Thanks a lot for adding these great features, I've just been trying it and everything works fine![](http://beta.scratch.mit.edu/scratchr2/static/djangobb_forum/img/smilies/smile.png)
Great update, makes Scratch a little more proffessional and it will sure improve the Graphis that can be made with Scratch![](http://beta.scratch.mit.edu/scratchr2/static/djangobb_forum/img/smilies/smile.png)
It would be great, if you could select a couple of dots to delete or move them all at once.
It would also be nice to have a rubber tool that works diffrent from the old one. It shouldn't just delete the outlines but actually change the objects shape.
Yet another feature, in addition to making two objects a group, would be to make to objects become just one. That would really improve the editor, because you would not have to shape the object as a whole, but you could divide it into basic shapes, which can easily be made. Later, by selecting two (or even more object), they could be fused!!
I don't know how to describe this last idea, but I will try^^ Imagine, you had a circle and a rectangle. Now you drag the rectangle, so that a part of the circle is hidden and a semicircle remains. Now you select the recangle and use the cutting tool. When you click the circle, it will become a true semicircle, the rectangle will vanish.
Will some of these things be done, too?

That's really cool! Maybe vector editing isn't so awful…Yeah, I get that problem a lot. You just need to make the border bigger, then make it small again.

Cutting shapes must have been a planned feature, because I actually had it documented on the wiki before this update.![](https://cdn.scratch.mit.edu/scratchr2/static/__1381524283__/djangobb_forum/img/smilies/tongue.png)
Anyways, have you ever thought of adding more sizes to the vector editor? You have to drag the slider about 3 or 4 pixels to make the size change, so why not have 3 more sizes between each of the current ones? But great edits, and Scratch on!

Thanks for the tips! I was advocating for an eraser tool in vector, but now that you have explained a little more, it makes more sense.

Poor eraser got removed from the vector editor, well, he's staying in the bitmap editor!

I would love the ability like illustrator's pathfinder
.
Add To Shape Area Adds the area of the component to the underlying geometry.
Subtract from Shape Area Cuts out the area of the component from the underlying geometry.
Intersect Shape Areas Uses the area of the component to clip the underlying geometry as a mask would.
Exclude Overlapping Shape Areas Uses the area of the component to invert the underlying geometry, turning filled regions into holes and vice versa.
