Newsom: DSA Will Become the “Mainstream Democratic Movement”
Will the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) become dominant in the Democratic Party? That is the direction the party is moving in. And now a leading and very high-profile Democrat, who has described himself as “ a hardheaded pragmatist ,” says (at least to an undercover journalist) that the DSA will become the “mainstream democratic movement.”
Candid Admission
In a Townhall Investigations video recorded on October 17, California Governor Gavin Newsom listens while a young lady (off camera) explains, “I’m a younger voter, and a lot of us, like we’re, we want to see the Democrat Party move forward. You know, we don’t want more Kamala Harris. We want, you know, more, I guess, democratic socialist policies.” She then asks, “Like, where do you see, I guess, the Democratic Party going?”
Newsom’s response is telling: “No one is arguing to manage the status quo or fail more efficiently. So I think that the DSA, the energy and the desire and demand for bold change, not incremental change, is very much going to be the dominant, I mean, that’s going to be the mainstream Democratic movement. Absolutely. No question about that. You can’t play in the margins anymore. The whole, the system’s broken. It’s completely unbalanced, and we can’t manage the decline. We have to completely reimagine.”
No Status Quo; No Socialism
Of course, many Americans who oppose socialism, this writer included, don’t want to “manage the status quo” either. But we also do not want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire, which is exactly what the DSA Democrats would do. The hardcore socialism they advocate would quickly extinguish our endangered freedoms and destroy our country.
What’s needed in both Washington, D.C., and state capitols across the country is neither a continuation of the status quo nor the imposition of full-fledged socialism. What’s needed is to return to the Constitution. The Republican Party may look like a bastion of conservatism, even constitutionalism, compared to the Democratic Party, but the reality is that, over time, the Grand Old Party has also moved in the socialist direction, although not as far in that direction as the Democratic Party has. The “capitalist” system that the socialist Left rails against has already become very socialistic, and it is this status quo we must move away from — but by getting rid of the existing socialism, not by adding more socialism.
Adherence to the Constitution
The New American’s Freedom Index rates all members of Congress and all members of state legislatures based on their adherence to the Constitution, our great charter of government that they solemnly swear to uphold. If you have not already done so, we recommend examining the voting records of the incumbents on your ballot this month, while comparing and contrasting those records to what you are able to learn about their challengers. You may be surprised by how low many Republicans score based on the Constitution.
But it is better to know than not know. And though this election year you might find yourself (once again) voting for the “lesser of two evils” because of how much worse the alternative candidate may be, the reality is that we must, over time, create the understanding about the fundamental principles of freedom and the Constitution that will lead to better choices at the ballot box in the future. And creating that understanding, during election years and nonelection years alike, is what the education program of The John Birch Society is all about.
