How Jail and the Bible Changed a Burner’s Life
In 2019 Austin exchanged wedding vows at Burning Man, a gathering of 70,000 people in the Nevada Black Rock desert, and left God out of it. Raised in church, he drifted after a 2014 move to Colorado, then married at the event within 100 days of meeting his partner. That first “burn,” he says, was full of heavy debauchery and drugs. It was dark, he explained in an interview with The New American’s Alex Newman.
After getting arrested, a sheriff offered Austin a book. He took a Bible, opened the book of Job, and treated his time in custody as a course correction. Two years sober, he now serves at a local church and talks about a peace he credits to getting back on God’s path. Now he is coming back to Burning Man to share Christ with people who used to be just like him.
