AB - This article analyses the relevance of law in different models of ideal society. Although it might be thoughtt hat law would not be necessaryin any ideal societyb ecauses ocial perfection has been attained, that is valid only for those models of ideal society which have perfected human nature (Millennium and Moralia) or posit a perfect natural environment (Abundantia and Naturalia). The author argues that one of the models, the Utopia of Thomas More's eponymous book, maintains institutional perfection. The construction of the ideal society is achieved through law, which has been reformed and improved by modifying legal imperfections. Law minimises the negative effects of the natural environment and the imperfections of human nature. In summary, this article demonstrates the positive function of law and the use men can make of it, and contrasts this with anomic or totalitarian solutions to political problems.
