AB - The Spanish Constitution of 1978 is the fundamental pillar of the legal and social structure of Spain, and article 43.3 states that “the public authorities shall promote physical education and sport”, which shows the importance given to physical education (PE) in Spain. The quality of PE in Spain has been linked to the demands of the profession to improve various aspects, such as the compulsory nature of this subject, the curriculum, the objectives, content, competencies and working and professional conditions of PE teachers, as well as the facilities, material and economic resources for PE and the practice of physical and sports activities in schools. The PE teacher is the key to the quality of PE and influences other important elements for the quality of this subject, and on him/her depends on the full development of students in this subject through knowledge, procedures, skills and attitudes, as well as multiple and diverse educational, social and health benefits. Consequently, this chapter addresses these elements that influence quality, emphasizing the performance of the PE teacher. In addition, this chapter proposes different strategies and challenges to improve the quality of PE in Spain.
