AB - Objective: To explore the determining factors in the choice and satisfaction of first-year resident physicians (R1) with the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology (OB&GYN) to identify areas for improvement. Material and Methods: A descriptive, census-based, cross-sectional study using a closed, direct, and anonymous questionnaire, collecting demographic, motivational, educational, satisfaction, and concern-related data. Results: 247 R1 OB&GYN participated. Mean age was 25.6 years, and the majority were women (91.8%). Overall satisfaction with the specialty was high (89.47%). Personal interest (48.99%) and vocation (46.15%) were the main reasons for choosing the specialty. The fulfilment or surpassing of expectations was perceived by 98.78%. The evaluation of the training program was positively evaluated by 79.35%, and the tutorial support by 78.95% (“Satisfactory” or “Very Satisfactory”). However, 46.96% considered the workload “Inadequate” or “Very Inadequate”, and 59.11% rated work-life balance as “Poor” or “Neutral”. 94.33% considered the 4-year residency duration as “Short”. Furthermore, most respondents (92.71%) expressed a positive recommendation for the residency program. Conclusion: High satisfaction is identified among R1 OB&GYN residents in Spain, coexisting with significant concerns about workload and work-life balance. The residency duration is perceived as insufficient by the majority. A review of workload and strategies to promote the well-being of residents, considering the extension of the training period is required. This study provides a robust perspective to guide future strategies for improvement in the training of G&O specialists.11.
