The Department of Public Safety has the following responsibilities:

  • Protect the lives and safety of all individuals within the College property.
  • Safeguard College and personal property from theft, damage, vandalism, or misuse.
  • Prevent or control crime on campus.
  • Investigate crime on campus, apprehending offenders when possible and recovering stolen property.
  • Preserve peace and resolve conflicts on campus.
  • Provide an immediate response to emergencies and to all persons requiring aid on campus.
  • Enforce College policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Advance cooperative relationships within the College community and contribute to its public-relations program.

Illness or injuries due to accidents which occur on campus or during a College-connected activity are to be reported immediately to the Department of Public Safety on the campus where they occur. If it is not possible to make an immediate report, one should be made before 48 hours have elapsed. All students are covered under the College’s student accident insurance plan.

The Annual Security Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, public safety authority, crime reporting policies, fire safety, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains crime statistics for the three previous calendar years, enumerating reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the College; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

This information is required by federal law, (Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or “the Clery Act”) and is provided by the UCNJDepartment of Public Safety.

If you would like to receive a hard copy of the Annual Security Report which contains this information, you can stop by the Department of Public Safety Office, located in Room SD-108 in the Student Development Building, 1033 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, NJ 07016 or you can request that a copy be mailed to you by calling (908) 709-7152 or 7403.

Daily Clery Crime Log and Fire Log:The Department of Public Safety maintains a Daily Clery Crime Log and Fire Log for public inspection at the public safety desk on each campus. The Daily Clery Crime Log and Fire Log includes all alleged criminal incidents and fires reported to the department following Clery Act guidelines.”

Clery Act Statistics / Campus Safety and Security

In compliance with the Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act , crime statistics are reported to the U.S. Department of Education.  Tools are available online to analyze campus safety and security at http://ope.ed.gov/campussafety/#/ . In compliance with the Federal Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act and relevant New Jersey Law, information regarding the enrollment of convicted sex offenders is available online at http://www.njsp.org/sex-offender-registry/index.shtml .

Campus Security Authorities (CSAs)

The College is required to document and catalogue specified classes of offenses (i.e. sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking), and to report these offenses to the U.S Department of Education in an annual report. In order to facilitate compliance in accurately reporting these offenses, certain individuals employed by the College have been identified as Campus Security Authorities (CSA). Included in the group of individuals identified as CSA’s are the following personnel:

  • College public safety department personnel
  • Individuals specified as those to whom students and employees should report crimes
  • Faculty/staff with significant responsibility for students and campus activities (i.e. student clubs, athletics, off campus class trips, etc.)
