50 Years of CES
Celebrating 50 Years of the Consumer Electronics Show
The original, silver-domed, space-ship styled, Las Vegas Convention Center opened in April 1959.
It was built on the former site of the Las Vegas Park Speedway, a horse and auto racetrack.
During its 31 year existence the convention center hosted this 1959 World Flight of Congress show and countless other modern business conventions.
During its time it also hosted concerts and boxing matches - with The Beatles performing there in 1964
and Muhammad Ali boxing in 1965.
The original convention center was demolished in 1990.
CES was held at the original Convention Center for 12 years. The
newer, larger, 3.3 million square foot, current convention center sits on the original site.
An Eighties' view of the original convention center and Landmark hotel during their early CES heyday.
The Consumer Electronics Show is a 1967 spin-off of the Chicago Music Show .
Between 1978-1994 the Consumer Electronics show was held twice each year, being hosted by Chicago in the summer
and Las Vegas during the winter.
Between 1994-1997 the show's summer exhibit was slowly phased out and in 1998, Las Vegas became its sole host.
This year we celebrate 50 years of the Consumer Electronics Show and of Las Vegas being its steady host for 38 of those years.
