Visitors to the final day of the 78th annual Oley Valley Community Fair will get a special treat.
Saturday will feature the fair’s car cruise, an event that gives car lovers a chance to swoon over a wide variety of vehicles.
“There are fire engines, cars and trucks of all different vintages, and tractors became a part of it last year,” said Ken Hoppes, car cruise chairman. “You name it, you’ll be able to see it.”
The car cruise is a special event for Hoppes, who is taking over running the show this year after participating in it for years. He’s an avid “car guy,” owning a blue 2007 Le Mans coupe and a longtime members of the Skyline Drive Corvette Club.
He knows a thing or two about cool cars, and he knows there will be plenty on display at the cruise.
“You’ll be amazed when you see the restored vintage hot rods, all the other vintage vehicles,” he said. “You can’t say enough about them, they look so great.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 80, you’ll love coming over to the cruise because you’ll see something that brings back memories from your childhood.”
The cruise will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Oley Valley High School parking lot, just across the street from the main fairgrounds. There is no preregistration, with those wishing to show off their vehicles able to simply show up and provide a $5 donation to the fair committee.
“You just roll up, pay your five dollars and you’re in,” Hoppes said.
Hoppes said that last year 210 vehicles took part in the cruise, adding that he expects a similar number this year. The event will not be held if it rains.
Along with simply getting to show off their vehicles, participants will get a chance to go home with some hardware. Hoppes said vehicles owners vote for their favorites and the top 10 — including two tractors — will receive trophies.
