A True '90s Muscle Truck

The idea of a muscle truck isn't entirely new. As far back as the days of the early El Caminos and Rancheros, stuffing a big-block V8 to make these haulers go fast always had a certain kind of appeal to it. But the malaise of the '70s reeled in all the fun, and for a long time, muscle trucks were few and far between.

But in 1990, Chevrolet thought it was a good idea to put the 454 engine into a C/K truck, use the C1500 short-bed regular-cab body, and make it look bad to the bone. The result was the 454 SS made from 1990 to 1993.

The Backstory

While not a totally rare truck, the 454 SS is just an extremely small portion of all the C/K pickups that Chevrolet produced over the years. Out of the millions of fourth-gen C/Ks made, a little under 17,000 comprised the 454 SS. A bone-stock, low-mile example isn't cheap these days, as Classic.com puts its current fair-market value at $42,740. When it was new in 1990, it carried an MSRP of $18,295, or $46,760 in today's money.

The one we spotted on Bring a Trailer was a pretty special one. It's a 1990 model, so it's one of the first ones to be built, and it was Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet in Newberry, South Carolina that year. It's only had two owners since new, but the shocker here is the mileage. It hasn't even done 1,000 miles in its 36 years of existence. Time capsule would be a good word to describe it, and even the red upholstery that's prone to fading still pops out even after all these years. As to why it hasn't even broken a thousand miles is a story we'd like to know. Given that, it probably spent most of its life in storage.

Why it's Special

Performance pickups were on thin ground in the '80s, which is why the 454 SS was such a big deal at the turn of the decade. It had a proper big-block V8, and also came with handling upgrades that actually helped it turn. Sure, it's a bus by today's standards, but it was a revelation over 30 years ago. If anything, it kickstarted the interest in performance pickups in the '90s, as Ford later responded with the F-150 Lightning in 1993. Today, nearly everyone has a hot truck, though ironically, the Chevrolet Silverado is missing out on that.

This one doesn't have the four-speed automatic or the more powerful tune that the later models got, but the three-speed, 230 hp version was only made for one year. Given that a lot has been modified over the years, gems such as these are getting harder and harder to come by. But whoever buys this has a tough decision to make, and that's whether to keep it preserved or actually drive it.
