Genesis Models Recalled Over Potential Seat Fire Kevin McCauley

Nearly 95,000 Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 models are being recalled because overheating power seat controls pose a fire risk, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents say.

The recall , which was filed on October 8, includes 94,622 2017-2020 Genesis G80 and 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis models. Front power seat motors on these models may overheat because of a power seat control switch, which can result in a fire while parked or driving. Specifically, the front seat slider and height adjustment control switch can become dislodged or damaged and run continuously until they overheat.

"Prolonged motor operation over time may result in overheating, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire while driving or parked," NHTSA documents read . "Under certain circumstances, an external impact with sufficient force may cause damage to the switch assembly, including displacement or misalignment of internal components, which may affect normal switch operation."

Hyundai first became aware of the issue in December 2021 through a Speak Up For Safety report received regarding a 2018 Genesis G80. By August 2022, Hyundai became aware of a second potential case and recovered the incident seat parts the following year. Hyundai continued to monitor field information through July 2024 with low levels of incident reports. By July 2026, Hyundai received additional power seat switch performance and associated thermal event allegations from the Korean market, which led to the October 2026 recall. Hyundai has recorded two alleged fires related to this issue.

A remedy is currently in the works. In the meantime, Hyundai is asking owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures due to fire risk. An estimated one percent of the nearly 95,000 units will experience the defect.
